RE: Upgrade exhaust

I have a complete stock 2000 996 C4, and want to add some upgrades. I have done the short shifter from B&M and now I want to do the exhaust. After the exhaust I am advised to upgrade the plenum (I have no idea what that is). On another website most of the 996 owners suggest the FisterD. Any other suggestions??? I appreciate any advice or suggestions

I have FisterD's and love them. From what I've read, many of the alternatives are too loud for most tastes.

For exhaust, the FisterDs are the best "bang for your buck" mod...much better sound, but no performance/power benefits. Other options like AWE (which I have), Fabspeed, etc. are definitely pricier but may give some small performance gains. The sound from each system is different, so if money isn't a key driver then listen to different systems and choose the one whose sound you like best.

The "plenum" is the device behind the throttle body that splits the intake air between the two cylinder banks. IPD, who makes a widely-advertised one, claims large HP gains. Some folks who have tested IPD's plenum in carefully controlled conditions found zero gain. They are not cheap--upwards of $900--so do your reserach first. There are loads of threads in here on the IPD plenum.

Other mods worth considering: upgrade suspension (the M030 RoW kit is the "bang for buck" winner). If you are seeking ways to go faster, invest in track days to learn how to better drive your P-car at the limit, in safe and controlled conditions with an expert instructor to teach you.

Enjoy!

Thought I'd add my one cent....I selected the M&K mufflers for my 2000 996. I did what I could to learn about many of the mufflers out there and narrowed down the list based on materials, workmanship, and sound. I wanted mufflers that use the 321 stainless steel, were meticulously made, and sound great. These are not cheap, but the quality and awesome sound is there - and I suspect a little performance gain too. They will be arriving next week and I am having them installed the next day.

My sggestion is to buy a pair of Spin Tech mufflers and have a reputable shop replace them. You can have them built to fit in the corners... the sound is amazing.
Search "spin tech" exhaust on here.. i have a few videos. Cost me $400 installed and i dynoed 12 hp to the wheels in gain.

BTW... i first learned about them when i had my 1981 Euro spec 928 dyno tuned. Headwork and fuel adjustment, cam timing and exhaust... the car ran amazing.. never should have sold it.

I hope you still have yours!

No, unfortunately I sold my 928 S4 early last year, and I do miss it. However, the 996 more then makes up for it

You may also consider After Hours and Agency Power...these mufflers also use the 321 stainless steel. 321 incorporates titanium and also has properties that offer long lasting protection, extremely resistant to cracking, can withstand more heat than you can throw at it, and inhibits residue build up. AF and Agency also have great, great sound but I went with M&K because of my earlier reasons and because of Ben's amazing craftsmanship, attention to quality, and certainly once again....the sound he delivers.

Look forward to learning what you decide on...

Hi feroz, we have a great Maxflo Muffler upgrade that is simple and easy to put on, and produces a nice sporty and deeper sound without being too loud. There isn't much power gain with mufflers on these cars unless its also done with other exhaust upgrades like Sport Cats. If you have any question, feel free to give me a call or PM me and I will give you more information on the options for it. But I would start with a nice Muffler and Intake upgrade to allow the engine to breath better and get rid of some of the exhaust restriction. If you decide to do it, I can make you a member deal on the package, if you go that route.
thanks,

I went with the cargraphic sport (loud) exhaust. The craftsmanshipis the best out there, and the sound is amazing.

Here is the video that gives you an idea of what it sounds like in the cab. You also have to be carefull about drone. somehow, the Cargraphic being very lout has absolutely no drone while driving>

I wouldn't trade my PSE for any other exhaust! The sound really is fantastic. I know it is kinda pricey but if you have the money it is definitely worth checking out.
