Some General Speaker Questions for '99 C2
First, I'm looking to replace all of the speakers in my C2. The sound is terrible and has no range. I'm no audiophile, but it is amazing how poor the sound quality is for a car that cost >80k when new...I can only hope that this is just what has happened as the speakers aged, and not what Porsche put out as a new product...ok, gripe over.
Anyway, I have a few questions. I am relatively savvy when it comes to speakers, car audio, etc., but have a few questions.
I have the additional door speakers, do not have the BOSE upgrade, and the previous owner upgraded the head unit (although I do still have the original) in a box in the garage.
1. I notice there is a small amp in the trunk. Does this prohibit me from getting any type of speaker? I'm assuming it is hooked up to the back of the head unit through RCA cables?
2. Crutchfield notes that ALL of the 4" speakers that they recommend need to have a "modified fit." What if any type of modifications are needed to get the speakers to hook up? 2a). Also, besides the Focals, any other speakers anyone else recommends
3. Finally, were the speaker hookups available at Best-Buy/Radioshack, or do I need to order a special type of vehicle specific wiring harness? I've never had to do this for any other speakers I've ever replaced, but this is a P-car, and everything seems to be a little different.
As always, any input/info is much appreciated!
Thanks,
DS

DS, sounds like your on your way if you have an amp and an aftermarket HU 99% sure they are connected via RCA cables. If you are not upgrading the amp then match the output to your new speakers. As far as the modified fit I recall some plastic cutting and possibly epoxying the new speaker to the old grill. On the wiring its a connector that mates the car wiring to your new speaker get them from Crutchfield usually free with speakers.I agree an your comment on the anemic sound system form a car of this price range. I ended up gutting everything and started from scratch. There are plenty of write ups all over and YouTube.

I'm running a 5ch JL amplifier. It uses 4 channels to run my focal component speakers and the 5th channel is a sub output only for my JL subs. I have it mounted on a carpeted board so that it fits in the trunk upside down and hidden with the matching carpeted side facing up. No one can see the amp if you open the trunk and this way if I have stuff in there its not banging up against the amp losening up wires.

I put in an Alpine PDX 5. It can go in the same place as the stock amp. I used Infinity Kappas to replace all the speakers in the car. If you use after-market 4 inch speakers for the dash and rear, you just need to cut out the factory speakers and use the outer ring to hold the new speakers in place. There is a complete write-up in the forum somewhere. With new speakers and amp, the sound is brought up to the standard you would expect in a car like this.
I found the original post, but all the pictures are missing... https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...our-996-a.html Maybe the original posted can update them...

I replaced my factory deck with a DD Unit, new amp and speakers. Kicker makes a 4" speaker that fits in the existing dash top under the existing grill (I have a MY03, so not sure if that holds true for your MY99).
I agree with GU9CCI on replacing everything. A lot of improvements have been made in the audio world in the past 13 years, so if you are going to take on this project, you might as well start from scratch. I had the MOST system and the difference between that and my new setup is unbelievable. With the top down and the Fister D Sport Exhaust (agree with pmkazz too), the sound is awesome even at 75mph*.

First off, thanks everyone for their information!
As to the exhaust reference, I've got a Fister D and it is the single best mod I have done thus far, but sometimes, I've got to have my tunes.
Stephan_Porsche, how did you put 6" speakers in the dash, and 6.5" in the door? Did you do a lot of cutting and customization (I'm guessing, yes).
Thanks everyone!
