New Member, Need Purchase Advice
Great forum...very helpful and excellent to see all the pics you guys post.
I am in hot pursuit of a used 996 Carrera C2, and wanted to throw this out for those of you with more ownership experience than me. Both cars are ultra clean inside and out and have a clean CarFax:
#1. 2002, guards red/black interior, 58k miles, will assumedly need IMS and RMS. Tires and brakes are 50%, probably would do a new clutch at the same time as IMS. $24,500
#2. 1999, silver/black, 60k miles, clutch, IMS and RMS done, also fresh 60k service including brakes, new tires. $25k
I have the equipment, facility and know-how to do the clutch, IMS and RMS. But with parts costs and my time I will clearly have more $ in the red car when the work is done, but its a 3.6L and 3 years newer. Which one is the ultimate better deal, all other things (like options, cost to deliver etc) being equal?
Thanks,

Thanks,
i would go with the '02. that 99 is cable throtle vs electronic throtle which changed in '00. Plus you get a more updated engine with a larger displacement. I personaly have a '00 which was a 3.4l but w/ electronic throtle. And if you are comfortable working on your car the oem clutch is about 500, 600 for the IMS and about 15-20bucks for the rms. so about 1100-1200dollars and your done.
Welcome. First don't assume the first one will need anything other than routine maintenance. If you're worried about the seals or bearings, buy an extended service plan and sleep well. The value in used Porsches, like other similar cars, is in the mileage. The '99 has been driven much less, but still has plenty of miles that it has not been babied. For me, because they are very similar in price, get the one with the color, conditions and options you prefer. Otherwise, you'll spend the next XX months kicking yourself for not getting the *** one.

Go with the '02. Address the IMS,RMS when you do the clutch and you're done. The only appeal the '99 has over the '02 is the IMS,RMS and brakes are already completed. But it will always be older with a 3.4l engine.
Apparently I cannot send a PM so can someone PM Jason and have him call me at 832-551-9880? Thanks.
