Auto vs Manual

Hi I need some advice. I'm looking for advice on buying a 2002-2004 911 Cabriolet. Wondering if I lose much performance with the auto trans vs manual. Plus maintenace costs of manual vs auto.
I used to have an 01 Boxster S manual that was a lot of fun.
Anything else I may need to know?
Thanks for any advice!

Andy

IMS maintenance/replacement requires removing engine and transmission on automatic, 6speed manual; transmission only...

6 speed for maintenance cost, simplicity and desired resale!

It's a matter of personal preference.

I prefer a 6-speed manual. I believe many Porsche buyers do, as the Tiptronics are often priced lower than the manuals.

on a 996, manual is the only option I would consider which is what I have, lot of fun to drive.
Even with a PDK in my 997 I look forward to driving my 996 when I have it out of storage. There is a similar thread on PDK vs manual on the 997 forum

I don't know why anyone looking at a Porsche would even consider an automatic. If it doesn't have 3 peddles, i would never be interested. So go with the manual all the way! I think it will really help with re-sale as well.

Manual, again as above. If you hadn't mentioned the word "performance" in your first post and were planning on cruising between coffee shops, then the answer would be different.

Spotting a trend?

+1. If youre looking to not spill your Ensure, then the paddles would be just fine.

Cool

In a 996.....it is the difference between "steering" and "driving".

I think the manual is definitely the way to go on the 996. On the 997 or especially a 991 with PDK, the choice becomes more difficult. This is especially true if you track your car, which is where PDK really shines.
