DIY 996 muffler removal?
Guys, I got stuck trying to bolt off my rear mufflers. I was able to loosen all 4 nuts. The 2 on the exhaust clamps and the 2 nuts holding the muffler in place.
The problem I have is that the bolts are too long and when I try to pull them out there is not enough room up top to pull them out . They end up hitting the body of the car. I tried pushing the mufflers all the way to the side to get some room but still zero clearance to get these bolts out. Am I missing something here? Please HELP I have some muffler deletes that I am anxiously waiting to put on

will try again tomorrow when i have time...so annoying spent a couple of hours trying to take apart just the drivers side...failed...oh well still learning. i just hope i can fit my hands in with a wrench to loosen the 3 nuts.

You should not have to take off the rear bumper. It's actually a very easy swap. I remember when I did mine,I unbolted everything i could see to take them off, till i looked online and saw i only needed to do the 3 and the muffler pipe clamp haha. I would suggest getting the Fabspeed clamps, they look awesome and work great. Esp if you're going to go back and forth from bypass pipes to mufflers.

You don't need to remove the bumpers and you can get to the three nuts fairly easily after you figure out what angle to place your socket wrench. I think I came in from the sides.
Once out, you can remove and reverse the two bolts so that they're easier to remove the next time.

medcap, let us know how it turns out and what it sounds like after the swap! Video clip maybe if you get a chance - who's pipes did you go with?

After you've taken it off with the three bolts that mount the muffler to the muffler mount, you can reverse those two long bolts so the nuts are at the top. From then on, you can remove the mufflers by removing those two long bolts instead of the three more difficult to get to ones...

Finally, found the 3 nuts holding the muffler and pulled the mufflers out. Mine had to be finessed out or more like turning, angling and tugging with lots of metal on metal screeching.
My forearms got tried turning the nuts with little 1/8 turns at a time...
It sounds like a beast from within...who knew a Porsche could make such sweet music to an enthusiasts ears. Definitely not for everyone but it's pretty amazing when you step on the gas.
Also with the mufflers gone I will have easy access to the spark plugs then I have been meaning to replace. Win win.
Try to get some video clips up later.

Yes. Those three nuts need to come off. You'll need to reposition your ratchet a few times during the process but it's not too bad. It becomes much easier once you've done it the first time. Reverse the two long bolts while you have the mufflers out. Then the next time you'll be able to remove them by just removing those.

Thanks guys. What a pain to access. After trying those 1/8 turns my fingers were cramping. Found an angle extension in my tool box and snuck it through with a longer extension through one of the gaps for the other side. Worked much easier. Now the car has a roaring when I jump on it. Love it!
