"" Front End Fender Conversion Question"" !!

I am in the beginning of converting a 99 996 C2 Cab with FRP/Fiberglass fenders ONLY.

I'll be using OEM 997 parts: turbo bumper, headlghts, an aluminum OEM hood.

My Question is, i want to know Feedback positive/neutral/negative about FRP Fenders, keep in mind that everything else would be OEM bumper and Hood.

Does anyone has installed this FRP type of fender and had any problem with it ?

- I dont want to be involved in any welding with steel fender, Just Put the Frp fenders maybe a little prep job to fit it and Done.. My cousin has a Bodyshop that could do the job. Just want to know if it would be reliable?

Thanks

FYI I Had done a lot of searching about conversion,

I am from puerto rico and 997 are in the top 40k ish and that's not in my budget right know.. I know that The FRP material is not the strongest material thats why i'am planning doing it only on fender, the other parts would be oem..

I personally do not recommend the "FRP" fenders. I went this route to save time and a little $$$. Waste of time and $$$. There is really very little to no cost savings. Having the fenders welded is easy, or you can buy metal fenders and tub rails already done for $4,000-$5,000.

I have read quite a bit about FRP body panels that you get what you pay for. On eBay and, other independent websites, I see 997 conversion kits in the range $1300 to $3000. For the prices to have this much disparity, would there be a significant difference in the quality?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-986-...f9df1e&vxp=mtr

This is an example of a $3000 kit. I don't know if it would fit well. But I checked the eBay feedback history, and there seem to be no bad feedback (specifically even for this product).

Now, for the durability, I think the fenders take in more stress than the hood, right? (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So wouldn't it make more sense to have steel fenders and an FRP/Aluminium hood? Bumpers are anyways going to be FRP or Polyurethane (better choice).

I have been sitting on the wall with regards to a 997 conversion for my car.. been quite a few months. Its not about dumping in a few thousands which I'll never get back, but whether the mods will last long.

Thanks
Shyam

Thanks A lot for your response, This info would be very useful really appreciate it, I think I'll go with the metal weld fenders And do it right.

I have a Question, I read something about the rail I Just have to cut the 996 fender RAIL and Weld it to the 997 Fender?

I have a Question, I read something about the rail I Just have to cut the 996 fender RAIL and Weld it to the 997 Fender?
I chose to remove the 996 upper rail section and fabricate a flat rail that would accommodate the 997 fenders.

One should also look out to make sure the FRP conversion fenders are compatible with OEM bumper or not. Most on the market requires their custom front bumper since its made to use the 996 hood for additional cost savings and convenience.

I've seen that kit but honestly I rather leave it with my Mk1 Aero look, The Square hood of the 996 in the end doesn't look right for the facelift..

One of the key aesthetics with the 997 (in comparison to the 996) is the rounded edge hood. The kit that I mentioned accommodates the OEM 997 hood. But in cases where the kit allows the 996 hood, having a grill seems to pull away some attention from the square hood. Nevertheless, this is something that can't be changed once the process is over.. so its safer and more satisfying to have the 997 hood.
