Can a E46 M3 Take a 997 Carrera S?
Can a E46 M3 Take a 997 Carrera S?
I know that the M3 will take a 2000-2004 911 carrera and C4s. But can it take the new 997 S? I am asking for a forum actually..
They didn't know there was a Porsche forum ..
Thanks

The E46 M3 is 5 seconds slower than a 1999-2004 996 C2 at Nurburgring, and 7 seconds slower than a 997, and 20 seconds slower than the 997S.....
I would say a 996 and an M3 are pretty equivalent with the average driver behind the wheel.
The cars are too similar in performance, so if one "beats" the other, chances are it depends on what speed they're starting at, the gearing, etc.. Not to mention the SMG takes human error and reaction time out of the picture.
From what I've heard, the 997S is superior to the M3, although I don't know how noticable a 20 HP advantage will be...

The figures I see are:
E46 M3 0-60 5.1s
Porsche 996 0-60 4.8s
The 996 is a lighter car. I wouldnt put too much credence to a video...I can make a video of a Yugo beating a Ferrari, but it may not actually be true....the M3 is an awesome car, and pretty evenly matched with a Carrera. On a track, I think it would come down to the drive 90% of the time. But your initial post of it "taking" a 996 is not quite accurate. Now a M3 CSL is a different animal, as is a 996 GT3....

I had an M3 and I've driven a few 996 C2's. The M3 is a nice car but it won't keep up. Against a 997 S, not a chance.
Also, you compared a 996 C4S and an M3. That's a different story because now you are talking about a very different car from the 996 C2.

This weekend I "took" an S55 Kompressor. Driver vs. driver rather than car vs. car. This discussion is just bench racing- look at Nurburgring numbers to get a more realistic answer- better yet, a controlled, side-by-side comparo at the strip and a road course.
