I've searched every forum. Everyone has a different answer…

some people say the car is in sleep mode… my remote won't unlock the doors. i currently have a trickle charger connected though the fuse box (fuse #c3) but all it does is display the airbag sign in the dash…

where are the emergency release cables located?!

you dont need emergency release cables.

open up your fuse box (under drivers side) and you'll see a big shiny gold/copper contact for you to clamp a battery booster cable up to (will have a symbol on it that looks like the hood/frunk opening).

Positive side goes there, negative side goes to anywhere on the car that you can ground it (screw, frame or in my case, i used the metal door latch).

This will provide power to the frunk release.

Bam. front opens and you got access to the battery.

 

i wish i had that positive tab pull out in my fuse box. but my 99 doesn't have that unfortunately, thats why i had to plug into fuse c3

no luck so far, pretty cold out trying to figure this out

Go to an auto store and get a battery charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Had that happen to me a few times.

 

99 has a manual front hood I thought. Shouldn't need power

Not sure about a 99, but my 2000 has a manual release for the trunk that is apparently blocked by an electrically controlled solenoid.

Pull the manual release for the engine compartment and you may find a positive connection for a jumper cable under a pop-open black cover in the engine compartment. Best of luck.

Try to find a cable that is located under the right headlight, for this emergencys. You need to insert a smal hook to find it, the same cable is also under the rear letf light. When you find it , pull to open the hood or trunk, good luck.

OK GUYS ! For all of you with a pre 2001 996/986 with the mechanical hood release latches that are locked by the electronic solenoid. I've Figured out how to open the hood, stress free! (for you)

If your battery is too dead it may not be able to take a charge from a battery maintainer/charger even after days of charging
so forget the cigarette lighter or the fuse #c3 trick
forget looking for the emergency release cables


What you need to do is:
*locate the 3 small holes on the plastic trim that surrounds the latches
*take a 5mm allen key and loosen the bolts inside ONLY 1 TURN OUT
*Lift up the assembly and locate the plate that stops the latches from being pulled
*Slide that plate toward the passenger side of the car and VOILA ! You are free to open the hood and engine cover as you please, unlock the driver door via the key hole to silence the alarm

Okay, but still more work than my way. On my (2000 model) car the engine compartment release is not prevented from opening via the solenoid (only the trunk is). There are jumper cable connections in the engine compartment that will allow you to get power to the car. At that point you can use the remote or turn the key in the door to release the locking solenoid, which will allow you to get into the trunk.

I guess they allowed the rear engine cover to open after the 1999 MY cars !
both my hood and rear engine cover were locked out completely!
