996 blinking warning lights

1999 996 Carrera 4
Was out for a Sunday afternoon drive, when I got back to the city and sitting in traffic, a few of the warning lights blinked for a second and went out. 5 mins later it did it again, but different warning lights, did it again 2 mins later and went off again after a second. Hit the highway and went home, for the hour drive back, no more random blinks. Any Clue??

Porsches tend to do unusual things when the battery is failing. How old is your battery?

I agree with this, get a charger maintainer (Sears has one for $29) and give it a full charge. Just because a battery is new doesn't mean it's carrying a full charge.

Also, check the battery terminals to ensure they are on tight, one could be loose, put a little no-ox on them while you're there.

I have had an early failure of a battery before, so even though it is new does not guarantee it is not a problem. You should be able to test it at a shop pretty easy. Mine was an Interstate battery, I was surprised.

thanks guys. I watched the battery volt gauge dance around this morning in traffic. Every time I sat idle, the volts would drop to just below 12 on the gauge and the lights would flash on. The digital displays on the dash would also dim. Maybe a battery or alternator issue.

I forgot to mention, I also have a 99 and I had to also replace the cable from aternator to starter. It is a known issue and gets corroded to the point of causing cahrging issues!

If the above does not do it, you may need a new ignition switch. Easy and cheap to replace that. It is a common gremlin electrical cause. Not sure what else besides what has been mentioned.

How long did it take you to change the alternator harness ? I have a similar issue, and the dealer wants to charge me an arm and leg.

alternator harness

took about 3 hours to replace, have to remove alternator, loosen bolts on compressor, etc. Not a difficult job just take your time. You will find DIY on RennTech
