Extra Key $862!

I'm being quoted what I think is a high price for a 2nd key for my 2001 Carrera. The local dealer gave me $591 for the key and $215 for 'labor'.

Is this in the range of what I should be paying for an extra key? Thanks.

Sounds about right. Several months ago, one of my keys wouldn't work remotely, so I called about getting a new one cut to my car and programmed by a dealer so that it would work remotely. The dealers near me quoted around $300 of labor just to program it. If the dealer will program a key that you bought from another Porsche dealer, you may consider buying the key from a Porsche dealer who sells online at a discount, and then bring the key to your local dealer to have them program it. Note that you'll also have to have the key blade laser cut to your car, which runs around $125 at a locksmith shop -- but you can get quotes on that as well. One thing is for sure, car keys are very expensive these days.

A relative of a friend of ours had a fire in her attached condo and the keys to her Cayenne were lost in the fire (the car was outside, so it was undamaged). It cost her $900 to replace her car key.

By the way, the key I had that wouldn't work remotely, I sent to a place in the UK who I found on Ebay and he fixed it for a nominal amount. If you have a key that doesn't work remotely, you might want to go that route. There's also a guy in the UK who will make a key for your car if you just send him a picture of it. He charges something like $40, but I'm pretty sure it's not a remote key (just a valet key). Good luck.
