Rear main seal oil leak.
Rear main seal oil leak.
I just found out I have an oil leak in my rear main seal on my 2004 996 with only 3000 miles. I've heard this was a problem on earlier 996 models but has any one else had this issue?
Thankfully there's a warranty but what a freakin *****!

Thats a ***** Britt, sorry to hear that. Some cars get them, others do not (like my 2/98 build 996). If the clutch is worn or you were thinking of upgrading the clutch and flywheel, now is the time to do it while they have her all apart.
Have they told you if they can repair it or are you getting a new engine?

You only redline it up to fourth?!? No guts no glory! Come on, live a little!
Oh, I've had a few RMS leaks (FIVE). It's as common as Arctic Silver on a Porsche.
My advice to you:
1. Have them measure the concentricity of the crank. If it is out of tolerance, it could possibly warrant an engine replacement.
2. If you desire, have them replace your oil with fresh oil. If they change ONLY the RMS and not the Interemediate Shaft Seal, they do not drain the oil. Thus the old oil is left in the car. If they replace both the RSM and the ISS, they do drain the oil. If you do not ask, and offer to pay for fresh oil, they simply put your old oil back in the car.
3. If you had more miles, I would have them take a look at your clutch, but that is a non-issue for you with only 3000 miles.
Side note: Depending on how bad the leak is/was, at times, oil can drip down upon the flywheel, causing a slight vibration when taking off. If this is the case, the dealers are allowed to replace the flywheel as part of this warranty repair.
Good luck! To me, it's become quite comical. It's more of an inconvenience then anything. But, everyone opinion varies on that subject.

I've had it done twice. One I paid for, the other I didn't. Long story on why it's twice. Suffice it to say, I had 80% left on my clutch, as I was getting a new engine, I opted to just start fresh (Porsche took care of this one for me, thank you Porsche!).
Second one happened when a valet fried my clutch and toasted my flywheel. I paid for that one, but it came at a time when I had an oil leak, so I paid parts only. (I would rather take the bus, then ever, ever leave my car with a valet again.)
