premature engine failure?
premature engine failure?
I hace a 99 c2 cab with 37K on the clock and full Porsche service history. Checked fluids at the weekend and water was in the oil and vica versa. Towed to Porsche today - has anyone seen this and does anyone rate my chances of getting Porsche to contribute?
Finally, suggestions for engine replacement strategy?
thanks

If this is not covered under warranty, I personnaly, would remove the heads and find out myself what when wrong. If it turns out that the block is cracked, leaks, bad oil seperator or a sleeve slipped, you then have a legitamate beef with Porsche. Simply accepting Porsche's word that you need a new engine without them specifically identifying the reason for failure, would be a mistake IMO.
According to my experience, under warranty Porsche doesnt allow the dealers to work on the internals of the engines. My engine failed at 55k miles, Porsche protocol would be to replace not repair the engine. Easycare, my extended warranty company, paid to have the dealer open the engine to determine the point of failure. The verdict was detonation in the cylinder that caused the damage. Easycare denied the claim and said that they do not cover failure due to detonation. Porsche argued how can you say if detonation is the cause or effect of the damage. Finally, PNA stepped in and paid for a lion's share of the new engine replacement cost. I paid roughly $2500. Porsche have convinced me that, they think it is worth it to keep a customer buying Porsches for life than worry about a measly $10k. In comparison of course. Goodluck with your car Chris!

The problem with Porsche simply replacing the engine, it prevents the owner from knowing what happened to break it. Unless it was under warranty, I would tear it apart, or have someone else tear it apart to find out why. You can always get a replacement engine afterwards, but wouldn't it be nice to know the reason it failed and to maybe use this info to get Porsche to replace it at a discount or for free if it's a major componant failure?
Yes it would. I'm assuming you dont have warranty coverage. Best of luck with your process of replacement/repair. I dont have any experience with repairing/replacing an engine outside of the warranty or dealer side. I'm sure there are many options. Please keep us posted, as this will be useful info for many. Thanks!
Thanks for the comments guys, the service rep at Porsche has escalated this to Porsche NA. Lets see what the nice men at Porsche NA have to say! Any work I should do while they are at this level? New Clutch?, sports exhausts? Does the RMS get replaced with the engine or is that the gearbox?
Thanks
Chris

Definately, without a doubt, replace the rms with updated flywheel bolts, then its covered by porsche for 2 years, when.. cough cough, if, it leaks again. Sports exhaust, clutch, etc are all things you can do to save labor costs while its apart.

I paid $2500.....The % just depends on what they charge to replace the engine. What are they charging for the replacement? I bet it has a lot to do with how far out of your warranty you are. Goodluck with it!
