vibration and spacers???

Ralph Boothe made some no-turn centercaps for me and we fitted it on the car today w/ my new sports techno wheels. (Thanks Ralph for all your work, the centercaps are absolutely beautiful)

Due to clearance issues w/ the front axle, we had fitted 15mm spacers on the front. but when I was driving on the way home. I noticed that my steering wheels would vibrate at slightly faster speeds.

Has anybody with spacers had this problem? Or the wheels just needs to be balanced. (the wheels are new and came mounted and balanced.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Peter

i know very little on this subject matter, but at least feel that i have read many posts regarding it. i have not heard/read of anyone successfully using 15mm spacers up front, for the rear yes, but not for the front. anyhow, hope you get it fixed up right.

HOW ABOUT PICS OF THE CAR? love those wheels!

15mm is quite a large spacer for the front wheels. Spacers are known to casue some issues when they get larger (3-5mm is usually the satisfactory range). Do you need 15mm spacers in there? Or could youget away with a 5mm spacer? I have a feeling these large spacers are your problem.

i had the same problem with the Troutman spacers. Are you using a hubcentric spacer. that is very important. i used a 18mm hubcentric spacer from H&R and had virtually no vibration even at 100+mph. the manufacturer of the spacer does make a difference.

I currently own a supercharged 996 with a pss/bilstein set up. Since I have a GT3 kit on it,the wheels seem to disappear in the new kit. I have chrome 18" turbo twist wheels on it and trying to keep them but I am also trying to make wider by using 15mm spacers. Anybody has some advice on vibration problems? please need some advice pronto. I plan to use 15mm adaptors front and back without shelling the extra cost of new wheels but mostly because I like the factory turbo twist. Any help anybody?

I htink RUF wheels require 15mm fronts and like 20 something rear spacers... (i might be wrong as the exact numbers are on my other PC on which I blew the PSU!!)

Peter, I am not a fan of the idea of spacers, 15mm spacers up front sound pretty wide to me also, FYI Porsche only offers 5mm spacers to use up front.

I know 15mm spacers seem kinda big for the front, I am debating the issue myself. Ralph Boothe has done everything he possibly can to work with me on this issue. I am going to sleep on it and drive it for a couple of days before I decide which way I am going to go. So far, I really have no issues w/ the spacers other then rubbing on full turn.

for pics of the wheels on my car, see my post on rennlist.

Peter, Let me get this right, you put 15mm spacers on your car to make a set of no turn centercaps work on your wheels, all I have to say is you have to be kidding, please tell me this isnt real.

well, when I bought the set of caps, I did'nt have my car. And when I realized that on the C4's the front axel sticks out a little more then the C2's and that the caps won't fit on my wheels. Ralph experimented with variety of things to see what would work. This is the result of a couple of hours of experiments and the only thing that would work on the C4's.
I'd just spoke to Ralph and we decided to take those things off and he is making me another set that would work ( the regular caps w/ the silver hood crest. )

I have to hand it to Ralph for standing behind his products. He not only been there to answer any questions, but is there to get his hands dirty with me and doing the work to make sure everything is right. ( I did'nt learn of the rubbing issue till I left his place. ) Now that this don't work. He is still working with me on a solution.

Spacers

Guys, this is a very timely topic for me as I'm about to order 15mm H&R spacers for the front only of my C2. I'm doing this solely for appearance purposes because I think the front wheels (I have std 17" wheels) are set in too much. Porsche DOES make 17mm spacers for 996's and they are approved for front end use. Theirs actually bolt on to your hub, and have studs, which require nuts from a 993. The spacers come with the studs and nuts, but the nuts are black and the head design doesn't match that of the 996 lug bolts. So, there should be no issue using 15mm spacers up front. I think the real issue is who makes them and the level of the quality.

The H&R DR series spacers are bolt-through, which means you need longer (45-46mm) bolts. Porsche makes only 30mm lug bolts. So, I plan to buy 46mm chrome lug bolts from Ralph Boothe for the front, and 30mm ones from him for the rear, where I don't plan to add spacers. The chrome bolts will all match, and look much better than the cheap steel ones that come with the car.

I would change my wheels before I got involved with spacers, I would not recommend the use of spacers up front only anyway, the car was designed with an offset in the front and in the rear and you will be changing that.

Justin, if spacers up front were ill-advised...

don't you think Porsche would not sell them for use up front?

wheel spacers

I believe I will add my 2 cents to this discussion. Spacers/adapters are widely used on all kinds of cars and trucks. We were one of the first to start using adapters when people were putting huge fenders on older 911s. The suspension was not changed and the wheels would have sat back under the fender and looked like they were in a deep tunnel. The adapters effectively brought the wheel/tire assembly out to the fender line. We make spacers up to 3 inches and more than one customer has stacked my 1 inch spacer on top of a 3 inch spacer to equal 4 inches and that seemed to be satisfactory. Mind you, I am not advocating that you do that. Years ago I had a customer take my spacers to London, where he showed them to Gemballa who had H & R to start making them for Porsche applications. A few years ago Porsche asked me to show them my spacers. Naturally I thought that if they liked the idea, I might have some part in it. They just fired my sample back to me, with a notation on my letter to them, that they would never approve adapters. Did all of you notice that adapters have been O.E.M. equipment ever since the 97 993 Porsche. Porsche just had H & R to make the adapters for them. Did you also notice that Porsche is now promoting a track widening kit which is a 15mm adapter for the rear and a 1/4 inch spacer for the front. I could have sworn that they took pictures of my adapters and put in their new publications. They look that much alike. I don't see that Porsche is offering longer wheel bolts with their kit as we do. We make a 30mm bolt for a standard application, a 38mm bolt to go with a 1/4 inch spacer and it is also the Cayenne standard bolt, plus a 46mm bolt to go with a 15mm spacer. I don't believe Porsche tells you in their publication, that you will also need to purchase a set of alloy lug nuts to attach your wheel to their adapter. Spacers/Adapers are here to stay as we offer 15 sizes from 4mm to 3 inches.

just thought I post the results. I've taken off the spacers and I am still getting slight vibration. It's the wheels that's off balance and not the spacers. Gotta get these things re-balanced
