new windsheild ?
new windsheild ?
Any idea on costs? Is this a porsche specific oem item or more generic? Dealer job or other options?
I have crack on the lower windshield and I hear a wistle at highway speeds could this be the cause? Either way I need a new one.
Thanks in advance.

Safelite did my 99's in about two hours. They used an OEM piece of glass (the OEM unit has a funny "P" in a triangle). I don't know the cost as my insurance covers it in full. According to the insurance company, there was not a big diff in $$ between the OEM and the aftermarket.
From the research I did, there is some suggestion that the PPG aftermarket is actually a 'stronger' more chip resistant glass. I don't know one way or another but every aftermarket piece of glass I've ever seen was not optically perfect. So, I insisted on an OEM piece of glass.
Any major glass replacement company should be able to do it. Just make sure that they've done one before and insist on observing them while they work on it.

Safelite did my Jeep in about 20 mins at work, small diff between OEM and aftermarket go with OEM. People told me at work to take it in to someone so they can clean the area well and then the new one will stick better (might be an issue at high speeds) but for the Jeep I'm not going to worry much.
If you have a crack winshield, you can call your insurance and file a claim. Front winshield is replace at no cost to you. It's safety issue. You might have to pay for the deductible. Have your insurance recommend a certified shop or have the dealer replace it for you with your ins. approval.
Not really worried about cost and don't want rates to go up. Just trying to decide what it the best window and installer.

Some states they cannot raise your rates for the windshield replacement. Check with your carrier/agent to find out what their particular policy is with that.
I would stick with the OEM glass though. Safelite did a good job on mine but did it at their shop (which I recommend so that they have it well protected and can actually clean out the debris that will inevitably make it into the car and seal area.
Be sure whoever does it orders a new seal. It is integrated with the windshield and is a one time use only item.
