Preface to the story...I had very little tire experience or knowledge before this event...

Long story short I hit a pothole at about 4mph (luckly) and it blew out the sidewall on my tire. Slapped on the spare and on Memorial day sunday...sears was the only thing open for miles. The only wide 18's they had were the Falken 285-35-18's. Ive only done about 35 miles on them and they are like riding on a jelly donut. I have an appointment saturday to get them swapped for the Pilot Cup's that seem to be a pretty high recommendation from the guys at the autox.

Seriously...jelly donuts would work better than the crap I have on there now.

 

Thanks for the heads up. I have heard differently. Some have said that MPSC are TERRIBLE autoX tires, as they take too long to reach optimal temp.

 

I heard they take time to warm up, but are great AutoX tires or warm weather street tires. The complaint I heard was they are like iceskates in the rain because they cool down and dont stick. Fortunately I dont put the top up, so she never sees rain. I dont really plan to autoX more than once or twice maybe...

Either way they cant be as bad as the crap on there now!!

 

I have falken 285/35/18 FK 451 in the rear and 225/40/18 FK 452 in the front. They are not "N" rated. I have never driven on jelly donuts but I have walked on jelly fish and these tires do not feel the same as that experience . I have driven 5,000 miles on the rears and 700 miles on the front. The rear seem to be great in the dry (as well as the front). The front feel better than my pzeros I had on before. I am no formula 1 race car driver and I have yet to auto-x (this year hopefully). I cannot compare these tires to others because this in my first pcar.

I like them although the rear does feel squishy in the rear but that could just be my experience coming from an M3 with 19's.

The rain was fine for the rears and they drove well for high perf tires. About the same as my yok's on my M3. BTW I live in Seattle so I have had lots of opportunity for wet driving.

Hopefully I will auto-x on them soon and maybe trade rides with a friend for a lap to see if other tires feel better or not.

 

I had the Falken FK452, its perfect in all weather conditions!

 

I went back to sears today and the teenage kid who helped me was coming up with all sorts of answers for me...

*My alignment is off - I see both tires showing road contact identically.
*The wider tires are not spinning at the same rate around turns - wtf.
*Z rated tires have a stiff sidewall and shouldnt sag

Any thoughts??

Which model Falkens? I've got the Azenis on my (non P)car, and love them to death. Perhaps that's a poor metaphor when used in the context of 'tires' and 'safety'.

these korean tires are good for JDM cars that often don't weight as much as a big heavy turbo or M3. compare the sidewall on a michelin and a falkin. My 2 cents.

(oh..and right now i cheaped out and am using Hankook ventus K104's...track day this weekend..will let you know if i die or not )

Although I had a set on my old diesel Jetta and there were awesome : )
