3.4L Engine and transmission rebuild

How much and what would it take to rebuild the engine and manual transmission on a 99' 996 C2? OEM specs.

Has anyone ever done such thing to their P-car engine?

Thanks

Take a look at Autofarm in the U.K. for engine rebuilds. I'd be very hesitant to have a 3.4 rebuilt rather than just buy a reman'd 3.4 from Porsche. Sunset will sell you a completely reman'd engine with all new components (alternator, injectors, sensors, wiring, etc.) for about 7800. I doubt that the labor on a 3d party rebuild would be much less than that.

I would also do a *LOT* of research on U.S. rebuilders. There are likely some good ones out there but you need to find out which ones are truely good.

And if you're going to spend that kind of money, I'd suggest getting as much engine as you can for the money.

As far as the transaxle goes, there are a few places rebuilding them. Powerhaus in Colorado seems to be the one who has been doing it for the longest. Don't have any ideas on the price from them though. A friend of mine is having his 99's transaxle rebuilt by someone in Florida. Don't know what the price is though.

Do the Remanu engines from Porsche have an updated crank case that helps with the the early MY failures??

If not, build the SOB!

I just started watching the idea of installing a larger engine into the 99. maybe the 3.6 or even the 3.8. Hopefully sometime soon the process will be ironed out. Check this link out. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...howtopic=13608

This early 996 C2 engine upgrade has been covered many times. I looked and spoke to many people about it and couldn't find a single individual (owner, not shop) that had a successful 3.6/3.8 upgrade in a not drive-by-wire car. For a few grand I would have been all over a 3.8x51, but I don't believe it can be done (at least not for less than you could upgrade to a GT3 for!)

Search for info or PM me -

Im wondering if you do the swap and just get a stand alone ecu...

Its the variocam that is the problem right??

With external ecu you could get cable throttle too

the problem is that the 3.6 and 3.8 are egas and the 99 c2 is cable throttle. So if you put in a later engine you need a diff dme, egas gas pedal system... this means new harness cable... also prob psm system...all sorts of suspension sensors... cost is a big factor

I have heard of people using the later engines, but using the original DME, and intake system....so you get less issues...in a sense convert to the e-gas engine to non e-gas vs. converting a non e-gas car to e-gas....that is a much cheaper and simpler solution to the problem.

I spent 2 months talking with shops Winter of 05/06 and a few guys said they had done it. Every owner I tracked down, said it cost WAY more than they thought, lacked reliability/drivability and they wished they had never done it. For a few grand more I would have loved a x51 3.6 or 3.8. You need a new wiring harness, pedal cluster, computers along with the motor. These cars are very complex from an electrical standpoint. I'm sure someone can do it, but do you really want to $50K conversion. I haven't heard from anyone on the board that actually owns one.
