We can compare cars by having the same driver drive different cars, monitor the cars performance then compare the measurements.

Which is what the blokes over at CAR Magazine did, monitoring the cars in real-time, and the brand-spanking-new just-off-the-boat barely-broken-in GT-R posted a faster lap time on its very first flying lap against a Porsche UK-prepped 997 Turbo.

I completely agree the importance of the driver. But this thread is, in ad nauseum, is about one car versus another, not Driver A versus Driver B. The electronic aids in the GTR actually make the driver less important in a launch and will be more consistent than a 6 speed TT. Props to Nissan, still would rather have my Porsche.

I give Nissan tons of credit! Tons!!!! But from what I see it looks like theres more drifting than driving in that Turbo?! Anyone whos driven on a track knows that drifting=slower times. The Nissan may be faster thats cool im not saying it isnt but that 911 still looks to be drivin very sloppy!

The video doesn't really show an entire lap, only cut scenes from the laps. Do note that the test driver is actually pretty consistent in the 997 Turbo, with 3 consecutive laps in the 82 sec. range followed by one blinder that's a second faster. I doubt that one can get 3 consecutive consistently-timed laps if one's just drifting around and being sloppy.

^^^ You can be consistently sloppy if your not a great driver. the fact is it will come down to driver if you were to put these 2 head to head. The nissan may be easier to drive. Id love to see Walter Rohrl drive both of em!

That just means he was consistently bad.

I would like to see for comparison sakes a COILOVER suspension added to the Turbo. The PASM and spings are not first rate for a car of this calibur. Those who have modifed their suspensions know what I am talking about. The GT3 and the GT2 have coilovers(adjustable) and the Turbo which is their top of the line in the Consumer Department has weak springs from 1990's and a brutal PASM in sport unless on very smooth roads. The GT-R has a Bilstein DAMPTRONIC system so it would be nice to see the comparo. Also special summer street tires = MSCP equivalent?

Just the suspension is all that I ask.

Would I consider the GT-R? = YES
Would I consider it at retail? = NO
Would I consider it below retail and low mileage? = WAITING ON IT

This is a Dead Horse topic that won't go away until real world people do real world driving.

If drifting the Turbo around at certain points of the video was considered consistent driving then we need to tell Walter R. to learn to drift a little better around his turns.

I give Nissan and the GT-R much credit for their accomplishments so far. I am sure it will be much talked about for a while to come. I am sure some Tuner is chomping at the bit to get his/her hands on it and make 800hp out of it. But that won't change the way we think about Porsche vs. Nissan.

It really is 90% driver and 10% car when comed to racing.
Heck, I can even smoke people in my minivan. Then again, I did watch an awful lot of Lewis Hamilton last year.

Yes, the Turbo was drifting way too much and it slows you down. What the heck is up with that?

Assuming the worst for the 997 Turbo and the best for the GT-R.

If the 997 Turbo times were a couple of seconds or so quicker, it will be in CGT and Enzo territory for that particular track.

Driven by whom???

You're comparing garbage to trash if these arent pro drivers. A CGT is a beast to drive. You compare a mag editors time in a GT-R to a mag editors time in a CGT?

Um, yeah, I bet the CGT was at full potential.

I couldn't agree more. I have been following both 997TT and GTR for sometime now and it wasn't until I saw both cars in person at the autoshow that I realized that they really are not comparable. Sure, performance is akin to each other but 997 has far more presence than the GTR. In fact, I used to think 997 didn't have much presence next to other semi exotics, including the Viper. I love the GTR but it looks no better than the new G37 or even the Altima coupe. The fact of the matter is, if money was no object, most, including many bashers of 997TT, would choose Porsche over Nissan.
