Yeah, I had wondered about the white smoke too. Feel relieved knowing it's normal.

Just seen smoke for the first time when starting my 996 Turbo S up early morning. Only had the car a week and it stressed me right out on seeing it, not a high miler only 26,000 miles on a 2005 car, should i worry????

My 997.1 GT3 does it every 8th to 10th startup. It scared me the first couple times but then I read through a German Porsche forum.
In German the flat engine is called boxer engine, therefore they call this phenomena the "boxer fart".

Never happened to me when my car was stock, now that it's modified it happens once every week or two.

I use this "cool down" procedure time to check the oil. No smoke on the subsequent start up.

No smoke under hard acceleration or after a warm start up. Only a cold startup, sitting for a week. Got me paranoid at first but seems to run fine. Almost like several drops of oil settle in the manifold after sitting for a while and then get burnt off instantly at startup.

Is this normal and can someone explain?
For what its worth, when i picked up my car, the dealer warned me about this and said it was normal. They said they would start every car in the lot on Saturday AM, said it looked liked WWII. I assume its the unburnt fuel that stays in the horizontal cylinder, while most cars are V's or I's which allows gravity to pull the fuel out of the cylinder thus no smoke on startup?

so from what this means that boxer is a better design, i would rather have the smoke then the fuel go back in the crank and mix with oil ?
