Smoke on startup

I only drive my 07 turbo maybe once a week. Runs great, no problems, oil level is perfect. Car has muffler bypass pipes with 100 cell cats I think. Anyways, every time I start it for the first time after sitting for a week it lets off a nice size cloud of white smoke. Lasts 5-10 secs and then gone and doesnt smoke at all. No smoke under hard acceleration or after a warm start up. Only a cold startup, sitting for a week. Got me paranoid at first but seems to run fine. Almost like several drops of oil settle in the manifold after sitting for a while and then get burnt off instantly at startup.

Is this normal and can someone explain?

Mine frequently does that as well. It is driven 3-4 days per week on average and I assume (hope) that it is normal.

Normal, due to flat motor design.

sorry! The flat six allows the very thin oil to pass through the rings when parked which is quickly burned off at startup. You will see similar occurences over at the STi forums and its been reported by 996TT owners for many years now.

My previous 996TT did it and my 997TT does it and it is normal.

That's weird, because my 996tt didn't do it and my 997tt does. Both get about the same amount of drive time and miles.

Normal for all flat/boxer engines! Oil residue in cyl. abowe the pistons can't drain into oil sump by gravity as it does in "vertical" engines, after prolonged switch-off. On next start-up it burns and make small and short smoke.

Our 997tt hadnt done it since new until a spirited driviing day and now it does it on every cold startup. We don't drive the car much but could it be a seal or something gone bad? We only have around 9k miles on the car.

Question here. Why doesn't it appear on a new car? Last night I got my first puff of white smoke at 6,000 miles. I realize it's normal but why didn't I see it before last night? I have about 4,000 miles/8 months on current oil. I haven't topped it off and its level is still fine, so the car doesn't burn oil but I think it will start now...

Could it be the fact that oil gets thinner as it ages? Does it make sense to switch to thicker oil in the first place?

Thanks, A.

oil does get thinner but tolerances on the engine tend to loosen up as well.

On my side i usually let the car idly 3-4 minutes after driving. This generally helps a lot i find. If you dont feel like sitting around get a turbo timer installed in the car. Those work great generally.

Its odd because it will go away for about 3-4 days then come back puff again and dissapear for a week. its not stable but Porsche there selves have said that its normal for this to happen. They also say its normal to go through nearly 5 quarts of oil between oil changes hehe.

I don't have this problem and I let my car idle for a couple of minutes before turning the engine off. It's in the owners manual.
