Space is very limited in the DME and, while it may be possible, we prefer to allow the user to have choice. Our system allows for a car to drive stock, when switching into a stock program. To be retarded to a valet "safe" level when switched into valet mode. These are items that would not be possible if we were to use one single program with the same number of maps we use now. Besides, don't you want another gadget to play with?

Is it related to the fact that there is no "sniffer that senses octane and adjusts accordingly," as Austin stated below? In other words, the ability to switch according to octane depends on an *ability* to tell what octane it is? And since the ECU doesn't have this capability, it cannot do auto switching?

>>>>>>>>>>>>
For what it’s worth, there is no automatic octane detection beyond the knock sensor, the DME does not have a sniffer that senses octane and adjusts accordingly.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In the gas tank of these cars, you are limited to a fuel level sender and a fuel pump. Every single aftermarket/OEM calibration uses knock sensor inputs for map changes determined by the knock potential of a given octane.

Hello Austin/GIAC (or AWE),

I've just read this whole thread over for the third time and finally am now beginning to understand the issues . Wow what an informative thread it has turned out to be. Anyway, I just realized I am not done with you yet .

1. Could you please explain the "boost maps" part, in simple terms that amateurs like me could understand, and why it's so important? It seems this aspect has been emphasized by both GIAC and AWE. Is it something that is unique to GIAC, that your competitors may NOT have?

2. I thought that there is just a maximum boost value that you set for any one of the 3 modes? I didn't know that there are actually "boost map" or "boost table" as well?

3. What are max boost values, in both Normal and in Sports (Overboost) mode, for the Pump Program please? And what are the values for the Race Program?

Thanks in advance. Again, what a nice thread, I am going to copy and paste some info here to another forum -- hope you don't mind too much. Free advertisement for GIAC/AWE!

Hi cannga,

Our race gas mode runs 1 to 2 lbs more boost than our pump program in the higher rev range. We also run the air fuel ratio a little leaner on the race gas program than the pump program. They are truly two separate calibrations in addition to the stock mode. Thanks again for all the interest.

GIAC,

what kind of support do you offer international customers? Where would you advise someone gets an ECU upgrade if there is no dealer located in the same country?

Already did. Thought since Andrew was here it would be easier ..

It is always difficult to get support from tuner shops when they do not have representation in close proximity. Feedback and response has to be met with phone & email exchange

It's tough being at a far distance such as you are and even within the US. But I found that if they don't respond, then that tells you something. Move on to the next tuner..Sharkwerks, IA, EVOMS, etc..and see what kind of service you get. I would contact all of them. You'll get a good feel of who you want to go with. IMO (assuming product quality being roughly equivalent), customer service takes priority.

<!--StartFragment --><!--StartFragment -->Hi MAR997TT,

My apologies for the late reply. I try to check in on this forum as much as I can but sometimes there are a few days between visits. I will look into your e-mail. Please email me the return e-mail that you used so that I can run a search for your contact request, and figure out where the ball was dropped. Although we do not have GIAC representation setup in every country that I would like to have it, we do have distributors in many parts of the world. Let me know where you are located. Perhaps we have a dealer in the same time zone at least.

As we make our own flashing tools it is fairly simple for us to set up a distributor in any country. Designing and manufacturing these tools ourselves helps keep the cost down and allows us to open a distributor with out exorbitant startup costs. At this point we have over 200 distributors in twenty countries and we are still growing. My point is that we may not have a distributor in your country today, but we may in the future. Any dealer recommendations from 6speed customers are definitely taken seriously and evaluated.

Hi Austin/Andrew,

I have some questions that I think other owners would be interested to know. I have been to the AWE/GMG site and am now a lilttle confused by the multiple options.

My car is 2008 Turbo 6 Speed with Cargraphic Exhaust. I am interested in the ECU tune that allows me to use normal pump gas, and revert to stock mode when necessary.

1. I seem to read somewhere that there is a lifetime free upgrade. Does that policy vary according to vendor?
2. Not all vendors seem to make clear the 30 day (or however many days it is) full refund policy? Does this policy also vary according to vendor?
3. In your experience, what percentage of stage II (I am assuming I am stage II) users need to change the clutch? I most definitely do not want this.
4. What's the difference between 7200 and 7000 rpm programs? Merely a gain of 200 rpm??
5. Which program, 91 versus 93, is for regular pump gas?

Thanks in advance.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
From GMG site http://www.gmgracing.com/porsche_software.shtml :
<TABLE cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=2><TBODY><TR><TD class=about>

997 Turbo

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=about>4 Tuning Options Available

Option 1 - 91 octane (true 91 octane - Porsche put a min. 93 octane on the car) stock rev limiter

Option 2 - 91 octane (true 91 octane - Porsche put a min. 93 octane on the car) 7000 RPM rev limiter (6-speed only)

Option 3 - 93 octane with stock rev limiter

Option 4 - 93 octane with 7000 RPM rev limiter (6-speed only)

We recommend exhaust upgrade with our flash. There is much more power and lower EGTs (exhaust gas temperatures) which help the new VTG turbos last longer.

ALL FLASHING IS DONE IN HOUSE AT GMG!!

Hi Can, I'm no expert but I have an EVOMsit flash and an exhaust upgrade. After 1000 mi, the stock clutch is still holding fine. I know GB had to upgrade his clutch but with his driving habits he probably should have installed a Stage 10 . He also has more mods on his car headers, plenum, etc..so that might be a contributing factor as well since his ECU is tuned at a higher performance level than mine.

Take it easy there buddy. You're gonna hurt my resale value. I did a dyno run and it showed a max torque of 594 ft.lb at the wheels. That's probably the culprit for the clutch.

Can,

A new clutch is probably going to be in the future for ya. It's not a bad thing though. It is much improved over the stock setup. Whether it's GIAC or EVOMSit, GO FOR IT!!!! It's worth it.

You could read my mind! I am now in the strange position of wanting more power, but not too much power. I don't want to have to change the clutch. At least for now .

I am actually split near the middle between EVOMSit and GIAC (like everyone else it seems, nothing new). To me both are highly competent, talented groups; both might have some customer service complaints here and there, but the good reputation is there and I won't regret going with one or the other. This is like Champion versus HRE all over again.

One thing I've noticed that's interesting about EVOMSit is the Sport Pedal feature: the change in the pedal versus throttle valve response time. I wonder how that affects subjective sensation of power, or whether that is something I must have, or should have.

Re. GB, you don't have to tell me. He gave me a ride in his car. LOL and just kidding.

1. We do offer a lifetime free update policy, all of our dealers must adhere to this. However, we cannot control if they charge labor for the time they use to install the software. It is simply not legal.

2. All of our dealers must also follow our 30 day money back guarantee policy.

3. Clutch usage is always a subjective question that is very dependent on driver style. I can say that the 100 octane program can definitely shorten the life of your clutch due to the amount of torque it produces.

4. These files are for people who run at the track and want just a little more RPM to hold a gear (through a corner or the traps). Our latest V2 software has been released in 7000 RPM form, and can be had at 7200 upon request. Again, the nice thing about this option is that your car will not record the overrevs unless you have a legitimate overrev (missed shift, banging on the rev limiter, etc..)

5. Being that you are local to us here in California, the 91 octane file would be your regular pump gas file. We have both options for those who can utilize 93 octane as their normal premium/super unleaded. We deviated these files so that the 91 octane cars would not be pinging and riding the knock sensors on a 93 octane file. There are some California users that blend 91 and 100 at the pump and run the 93 octane, we do not want to require people to do this.

Austin - I have your flash through AWE. How do I know what version flash I have, if there is a newer version and what the differences are between the version I have and the newer one (if mine is not the latest?)
