Cross-post: GT-R versus 997TT at Thunderhill
interesting...
i like how somebody mentioned well just change the tires, transmission, and suspension, and it will run circles around the gt-r... lol!
how on earth is that stock for stock?
i loved the - well, that's no fair, put mspc on the 911, and make it fair... lol! how is that stock form?
or the- just add a few mods, very easy... lol! how is that stock?
the gt-r tune (cobb or haltech) and exhaust nets almost 600hp.
compare stock to stock.
thanks for the write up. it will not change my mind on getting a porsche. i'm eagerly awaiting the new 911 (launch control, paddle shifters, dual clutch transmission)... sounds a lot like the gt-r, but i'm going to get the 911 anyway.

You missed the point. Which was that if Porsche wanted to make the TT the flagship sports car and easy for any putz to go fast in they could have by doing those things. But that's not the intent of the TT.

Is this a possible scenario?
1. The car is so heavy that they have to throw a lot of power, a lot more than claimed, just so it would beat a Turbo at the ring.
2. But... since the car's sole existence is based on the mantra "good, for the price" (deadly qualification), there is no budget room to upgrade gear box/engine internals appropriate to that power level.
3. Now realizing the internals will not sustain the claimed performance for long term ownership, they issue the unusual warranty conditions? "Your car will do the ring in 6 minutes 59 seconds, but don't you even think about it?" Actually, think about it, but don't do it?
No doubt a very good car, but I see "problems."

That hamburgered tranny is an isolated case, and no doubt had the living daylights thrashed out of it. Nissan spent yrs developing and testing this car, including the tranny. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.
I'm glad you chimed in.
Here is a article of a Techart 630 bhp TT vs a stock one at buttonwillow.
http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=7077
"Whether it was the long, grueling break-in period or that it was set up for the open road, the GTstreet had trouble keeping up with the stock 911 Turbo on the skidpad. TechArt installed its custom coil-over suspension kit, which reduces body roll and lowers ride height by about an inch, but the stock Porsche outperformed the TechArt on the skidpad. Also, despite being fitted with the company's upgraded brake system, it took the GTstreet seven extra feet to stop from 60 mph. The culprit may have been the GTstreet's Michelin Sport Cup tires, which may not be the ideal shoes for the awd TechArt 911's setup. The car fared better through the slalom where it was faster than the stock 911 by 1.7 mph."
So if Chris wasnt using any more than stock hp, and in this case the stock TT ran on PS2 vs the MPSC on the Techart that the stock TT would have been faster on the same tires.
Who's the idiot now???

i already have a gt-r, i love the transmission... it's like nothing i've ever felt before. it was bizarre to feel the clutch grab for the first time. but i'm looking for another toy (rwd)... i've got a few in mind, but the 911 c2s has my attention this week.
i've surfed enough of these threads to know that you think it's a conspiracy that the gt-r has the numbers it has (i.e. overrated hp, exaggerated times, r compound tires - stock, and electronic nannies - i have no idea why good engineering is perceived as a negative).
i appreciate your input, but your philosophy is not inline with mine regarding the gt-r. i've never driven anything like it. my first track event in the gt-r is in two weeks. i'll know more then.
cheers.
What about the two grey market ones and the one tested agains the GT2 by best motoring that failed? There arent that many out right now.

I don't think anyone is an idiot, but you, my friend, have a very selective and biased style of researching and debating a point.
You should read more of the above comparo test that you are citing for evidence. The stock GT-R handily beat both the stock and the modified TT.
What say you to that? Was the GT-R a ringer and the TTs driven by fools?
Plus, does anyone really believe that PS2s are faster around the track than MSPCs? Sorry dude, that's laughable.
-Chris
? Is this what happens when your goal is to copy a legend, instead of following sound engineering principles? Throwing power at weight is hardly good engineering. One has to remember Nissan, although a very good company, is not exactly a shining beacon when it comes to engineering and design prowess. In the US, its low end cars is third best behind Toyota and Honda, its high end Infinity cars are third or fourth best and being bettered on the sporty side by BMW, the luxury side by Lexus. They are very good cars, FOR THE MONEY. So I am not surprised that "issues" surface.
Lastly could someone with legal expertise explain the enclosed warranty term to me? "Racing" as in, "take this thing to a race track and wave goodbye to your warranty"? If this is true, it is not acceptable. My Porsche manual does not say this.
