BMW to Porsche?
BMW to Porsche?
Hello,
My dream car is a 997tt but am also considering a 997 Carrera S (used) or a 996 Turbo (used). I currently have a BMW 335 but my ultimate goal is the 997tt.
These will be much different cars than my current BMW 335 (2007). This will probably be my DD, and I plan to track 3 or 4 times per year with your occasional autocross.
My 335 is currently running 330 whp and 351 wtq on the dyno with GIAC stage 1, AMS FMIC, AR Design DP and Bastuck Exhaust. GIAC stage 2 is around the corner and I suspect will put me in the 350/360 whp and 370/380 wtq range. I also have KW coilovers, iForged 19's and a host of cosmetic mods.
My car only has 17k miles and will either sell the car and get the 997 Carrera S or 996 turbo. My other option is to just keep the 335 and in about 5 years or so look at a 997.2 turbo (used).
Any thoughts on what you think I should do? Are there any other former BMW owners that can chime in? This would be my first porsche so any advice would be greatly appreciated
I also posted in the 997 forum but wanted to hear from the Turbo owners as well
Thanks in advance<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Hello Daya,
We met at the car show in Glenview, i showed you my 996turbo. I honestly think a 335i is a better DD than a 911 turbo. I see the 911 turbo as a weekend fun car ...not saying it cannot be DD. Its just 335i is more practical (more room, cheaper maintenance, not much of an issue with adding miles and depreciating etc..)
If i were you i would wait it out and get the PDK equipped cars in a few years. They have all the gadgets and tech. In my case i love my 996tt since its modded for high hp and have a X5 for dd.
let me know if i can help..pm me.

I made the switch from a 335i dd / Lotus Elise weekend split to one 997 Turbo. I am a bit worried about the mileage, but in the end, these cars are built to endure, so why not? Plus, the 335i would occasionally get stuck in the snow even with blizzaks, and I don't think the 997tt will.
I had always thought the 335i was a quick and nimble car. I had both cars in my garage for about a month of overlap, and after driving the turbo, the bmw felt like a slow, limp, wet, noodle. I was not sad to see it go. My wife has a scion xb, so if I really have to carry anything large or dirty, or a third passenger, we drive that car. it's not fun to drive, but I can survive it.
Do it if you can, you won't regret it.
By the way, I autocrossed the 335i a couple times (when the elise wasn't available) and I thought it was awful, really heavy, lots of understeer, and the turbo lag prevented quick mid-corner throttle adjustments. I autocrossed the 997tt the weekend after I bought it, and it posted times similar to what I had done in the elise. It is a serious machine.

996tt dd
I don't think I would have my tt as a my DD. The mileage and wear n tear would just kill me. My TT is just a warm weather weekender.

I have change my 335 with vishnu computer, FMIC, double intake and castles exhaust for a Cayenne TT 2004 to be used as my DD. It is heavier but my kids (twins plus a little baby) really appreciated the added space. In one or two years I will be buying a 911 TT as a weekend warrior. Now let the mods begin

Wow - thanks for all the great feedback!
Is it obvious there are very passionate car enthusiasts on this board and it sounds like any ex-BMW owners are happy to have made the switch. I have been reading a ton of posts on this forum and the mentality is so different from posts on the BMW forums I frequent. Not to say the BMW forums are bad or negative (I love my fellow BMW enthusiasts) but there definitely is a different mindset overall.
I will continue to be addicted to this forum to assist in my decision, reading everything I can about the driving experience, features and most importantly, mods!
I think I will exercise prudence in attaining my Porsche goals based on personal experience, in years past I bought an A4 when I wanted an S4, I bought a 335 when I probably should have waited for the new M3. I am leaning towards sticking with the 335 for the time being and when the time is right get a used, 997 TT.
Here is pic of my 335 for those who are interested

Here's a totally different take on your question. I went from a M3 with all the Dinan mods to the 997TT. The supercharged M3 was nearly as fast (without the turbo lag) as the Porsche and handled much better until I put a new suspension under the Porsche.
Before I took delivery of the Porsche I went to the Porsche Driving School. It was here that I experienced 997 2S on the track. I came away convinced that 99.5% of my driving could be satisfied with this car for half the price.
I would strongly urge you to take the Porsche driving school in Birmingham, AL and you will be able to compare the several Porsche models, including the Turbo.

I was a diehard BMW driver, 11 cars in total before making the switch to AUDI for my DD.
My TT is for sunny days only, which are few if any.
I modded just about every BMW i had and took a serious bath on all of them.

The Pcar can do winters with ease, but have fun hauling crap around and parking it.
Once you mod it you can kiss winter driving good bye.
Keep your BMW and go buy what ever you can afford for a 2nd car.

daya im in the same boat as you. my only problem, im moving in 8 months and not only have to relocate, but me and the wife are going to rip down and rebuild. so the 997tt is taking a bit of a back seat here for a year or so.
this is good. it will give me more time to watch the market for exactly what i want, and see how the new 997tt mkII affects the mkI. this also gives me time to plan out my mods way ahead of time and research the crap out of them.
by the way doesn't the bastuck just sound sweet ! i have mine hooked up with the RR mid pipes. wouldnt trade it for anything on this car.
