Break in Period

Is break in procedure really necessary? Manual says not to go beyond 4500 rpm until 2k miles. Will my engine be damaged if I do full throttle few times during break in period? I have 2010 tt. thanks

I dont believe your engine will be terminally "damaged" as such but id take the manufacturers recommended advice as much as possible. Ask yourself how you would treat a virgin (engine) in comparison to one (engine) which has been "had" numerous times and therein lies your answer . If you plan on keeping your car for a while then personally id go easy during the first 3000kms in particular. Its not just your engine, the gearbox, diff and brakes all require some care and finesse to bed in properly so to get the best out of them long term. The first 1,000kms is more critical than the following 1000 and so on. Never ever idle the engine to warm up to operating temperature. Once the engine has dropped off the initial start up revs down to the regular idle rpms drive straight off and let it reach operating temp driving slow. Dont load it excessively by driving at full revs and never lug the engine in a taller gear to keep rpms low, youre better off with more revs and less load) and dont do anything too crazy until it has reached operating temperature.
Hope this helps .

Full trottle pulls during the break in period is the best thing you can do for your engine. How do race engines get broken in? Not woth 3k miles of slow driving.

^^^ Racing engines are also built differently. No one yet has revealed irrefutable proof that the theory of driving it like you stole it is actually good for the engine. And, I don't count that old inter-net link with some guy touting his "theory".

While I dont ignore the factory recommendation I definately dont redline my new cars for a thousand miles or so miles. I drive it normal, just as I would every other day. That means some hard acceleration runs here and there, I definately did not obey the 4500 or whatever it was rpm guideline limit, thats nonsense IMO.

Drive it as hard as you like, just take care of the car maintenance wise and dont abuse it and this engine will perform deep into the 100k mile range.

by the book

I'm at 1300 miles and counting. Should be at 2k miles in another 14 days. I don't see it as a big deal to drive gently for the first 2k miles. The 3.8 motor has plenty of torque down low.

A race engine is rebuilt very often, maybe after every race, so I don't think that comparison is a smart strategy for the street car. I could be completely wrong, but common sense says bedding in all the parts for a few thousand miles would be beneficial. Of course xseal paid his money so can drive his car anyway he wants, I just won't be the guy to buy it from him second hand.

No sense crying over spilt milk.......and look on the bright side....you had a lot of fun doing it anyway .

GTSilver2010 has the right approach to me. The 3.8 engine has plenty of torque down low so why bother wringing the living lord out of it now when there will be plenty of time to do that later on after all the running surfaces have got to know one another properly.

And salesman's advice.....too funny on that . Since when did you start believing a car salesman? .
I'dve honestly said the smart thing to do for all those with genuine doubts would be to ask your dealer to email Porsche AG's "R and D" dept and get a formal response why they wrote the owners manual running in procedures if they are totally meaningless . Hilarious!!!!!

Thats why I buy new Porsches only . Theres just way too many experts and too many theories out there.

Geezus... why would anyone listen to their salesman about how to break in an engine???! "Gets the cylinders adjusted", WTF!!! Are you kidding me?

It kills me how everyone has their proprietary method of how to break in an engine when basically the only reason they believe theirs IS the right way is because nothing broke; I mean again WTF?

This topic has been beaten senseless. There are some basic known FACTS and you know what, these FACTS are in the manual; like vary ENGINE speed, suggested rpm limits, warm the entire drive-train while driving, no full throttle bursts, etc... When someone says beat it, or break it in for 1000 miles then go hard, or whatever personal speculation, cracks me up. How has the data to support these scientific claims been attained?
