Hoen have an inventory of D2S bulbs for warranty purposes, they wont sell new as their supplier in Japan closed down after the shop flooded and they could not afford to restart. Ridiculous amounts of $$ in equipment was lost and insurance was lacking they said.

I'd be afraid of fake Ultinons as they have been out of production for years.

Swap the bulbs to isolate the fault, could be the igniter / ballast that's failed which is not uncommon. Then go from there, does not take long to swap out, fingers crossed it is the bulb as that's the cheapest part.

Had no idea, tragic the whole thing was!

Swapped the bulbs across, both work but the one that was throwing the error seems to have a slightly yellow tinge, almost like it's a lower k. didn't drive it around just in the garage.
I'm travelling on business, so it will be a week till I can thoroughly test them.

What other alternatives are there for 5800k - 6000k bulbs?

I find most advertised 6k are the whiter ones which I prefer personally, don't want any blue or purple in there, cheapens the look. Garax 6k or real Ultinons are pretty good options. You want the Garax with the metal tab on the bulb base, and yes, there seems to be fake Garax running around as well, as if it wasn't a pain enough to buy stuff!

I've purchased from the guy in BC that I linked earlier. Based on his info and the product I received, looks like Philips is still making the Ultinons...although not for Europe or USA.

Only until August 10th (2 days) - I guess I'd rather know in advance that order won't be fulfilled until a specified date - better than wondering why it's taking so long. This is a good vendor - wait until you see how he wraps the package.

Just purchased a set of these:
http://www.kbcarstuff.com/Philips-Ul.../pb-d2s-6k.htm

They are also in Canada, C$214 with taxes and shipping, better priced than the eBay listing.

Got my bulbs and installed them this weekend. These things rock! This is a MUST DO upgrade. The light is much better and so much brighter over the OE bulbs. It's almost a pure white light with just a hint of blue. Very close to what LED lights put out.

Hey NickS, do you have OEM/Ultinon side by side pics you could share?

No but the OE ones looked like the brown one in the middle. The only difference I saw between the OE and the Philips was the color of that vertical piece next to the bulb.

real Phillips Ultinons have a violet hue. the fake ones have a very white LED-like light with a slight blue hue.

read my post here about my experience with fake ultinons and how to spot the real deal vs the many knock offs on the market

When they initially turn on they have a violet hue but then that goes away.

And I bought from the same place others have bought from.

perfect, that's where I ultimately bought mine from after I returned the fake ones from another vendor (who claimed they were 100% real).

With 6000K Bulbs the the violet hue is still noticeable even after the lights warm up. This is pronounced especially if you have white LEDs installed on the side markers as well as the lights in the bumper. From what I've seen the 6000K bulbs will never be true white or have a blue hue, for that to happen the bulbs would need to be 8000K-10000K.

Either way they the 6000K Ultinons look significantly superior to the OEM yellow bulbs. and if you have LEDs installed the OEM xenons look very very yellow in contrast to the LEDs, so the ultinons are a great upgrade in that regard.

I'll pay closer attention tomorrow morning when I leave for work. I honestly do not see a violet hue to the light.
