Paint Meter Readings on Used 997 TT ...

I am looking at an 07 TT. The paint meter check came back with these numbers:

Left front fender: 4.5-5.5
Left door: 4.5-5.5
Left rear quarter: 5.5-6.5
Roof: 4.0-4.5
Right front fender: 7.0-8.5
Right door: 7.0-8.5
Right quarter: 6.5-8.5
Hood: 4.5-5.5
Rear deck lid: no measurement due to material

I was told that they are still painting 997s by hand and that this accounts for the variation. Any thoughts on this? Thx!

Just looking @ those number, it "seems" like there is a problem with the right side. I would pull back some of the trim in the door and under the front hood to see if you can see any overspray or signs of a repaint. The left side, roof and hood all are within the "range" of a factory paint (4.0-5ish). The only reason I know that number is I was at the dealer this weekend and they put a paint meter to my car. Was 4.5-5.0 all around.

The first thing you need to consider while measuring paint depth is the regularity of results...On the other hand, thickness is depended upon colour, but an unpainted car should result in same numbers...There are some parts painted at that car for sure...

Still no excuse for a 3mm difference between some panels if you ask me...

I had to go back and look at my digital photos of my 03 4S and they did the paint meter for me because I bought it out of state and did not go see the car. All the reading were 5.0-5.5 on every panel. It sure looks like the right/left quarter, door and fender were painted.

I had a 04 GT3 that showed the same numbers and the whole right side had been painted, it cost me when I traded but the work was excellent. I only found out because the local Porsche dealer had bought the car from Florida, sold the car locally and knew it. The car went from the original dealer in Florida to Scottsdale Porsche to San Diego(Sports Car Company) to San Antonio(Ferrari San Antonio) and then to me in San Jose where I lived. I moved to Scottsdale about a year after I bought the car and Scottsdale Porsche knew the car.

I paint metered my 996 turbo and it was symmetrical left to right within 0.5, with the centers (hood center, roof center being about 0.5 to 1.0 thicker). Looks like a right-side repaint.
