2005 Turbo vs Turbo S

I am very new to the Porsche world and I am looking at a GT3 but journey started looking at TT cars mostly 2004 and 2005.

I know that 2005 was the year that the 997 cars came out and I looked at TT coupe that was really nice.

A couple of questions, are the 2005 TT cars considered 997s? They look exactly like the 996 cars.

In my research I noticed that only the 2005 Cabriolet had an option for S and it appears that all coupes were S cars--is that accurate?

What are some of the issues I should be aware of should I decide to go TT car instead of the GT3?

The car I looked at had an original sticker of nearly 130k in 2005 and is seal grey (my second favorite color). It has 18000 miles and is CPO for 57,000 from the local Porsche dealer. Does that seem like a reasonable price?

FSU-997TT is infamous around these parts
Sounds like you are looking at a 996 TT......2007 was the first model year for the 997TT......which started showing up in the US in mid 2006. The 997 cars started in 2005.....and the 996TTS ended in 2005 so there was a little overlap.

Here are some answers to your questions Zer0t

---------------------

No they are the last of the 996 Models

In my research I noticed that only the 2005 Cabriolet had an option for S and it appears that all coupes were S cars--is that accurate?

If I am not mistaken, 2004 was the last year of the K16 (Smaller Turbo size) Porsche Turbos. 2005 was for the S models only (K24).

What are some of the issues I should be aware of should I decide to go TT car instead of the GT3?

These cars are incredibly reliable. If you don't modify the engine even more so. The one you are looking has one of the best color options in my opinion (hint look at my signature ) and if it has a warranty then go for it.

The GT3 is more aggressive, if you don't track it then no where near as much fun as the linear acceleration from the 996TT. Simply flashing the ECU, adding a free-flowing exhaust and air filter will give you a 550hp car that you can really have fun with. Even if you keep it stock it's a blast to drive.

The car I looked at had an original sticker of nearly 130k in 2005 and is seal grey (my second favorite color). It has 18000 miles and is CPO for 57,000 from the local Porsche dealer. Does that seem like a reasonable price?

It seems like a great price. Have a Carfax check on it and make sure you got an inspection sheet from the dealership certifying that it has been thoroughly inspected by Porsche. Since it is being sold at a Porsche dealership the inspection is a given, especially if it's warrantied. Just to be safe though, ask for it.

Hope this all helps and good luck with your decision. You will NOT regret buying a Porsche.

☣MUSCLE☣ thanks for the detail. I wish I would have gotten some of this posted up Friday night and I would have had a car yesterday. .

I really like the GT3 but I know that I'll want to drive it a bit so that's why the TT seemed like a cheaper alternative.

Just a quick clarification. All 2005 coupes have the improved (K24) turbo chargers on them?

cheers

As long as it's a certified "S Coupe" then yes. Turbo S and GT2s came with the K24s which are VERY fun to modify.

Also, if you are going to be driving this every day, the 996 TT is more forgiving as a daily driver. Without some sort of track-use the GT3 isn't nearly as fun as it can be. A Carerra on a diet and some steroids.

It's definitely not an S coupe so I would imagine it has the lesser turbos. I am not looking to do extensive work but an exhaust and tuning are a definite to give it a tad more punch. The car really looks showroom new...now I am wondering if I pocket the extra 8k and get the TT car? Hmm......

thanks again for the help. I assume you really like yours. What work is in progress?

850AWHP

Get yourself a Re-tune and Exhaust. You'll love it.

Also, do not think of the K16s as "lesser" turbos. Yes they are smaller but they can also be modified to get CRAZY numbers. Many tuners have gotten between 650-700WHP from them ! That's wheel not crank! Ridiculous!

But I personally like to make more power on lower boost. GT30s are what I am working on at the moment

You said it was a 2005 Coupe? Take some pictures of the car, three will suffice, front rear and interior.

Let's see those pictures before you buy! Upload them from your cell phone at the dealership if you can.

I will. I was also looking at an 04 cabriolet with 19000 miles for a couple grand less. I know that the coupe is a better performer but I don't mind dropping the top on occasion either. The cab is in my first choice color, artic silver, but seal grey (no offense) is my second. I looked at black one and didn't think the car looked great in black.

Here is the 04 Cabriolet.

I'll snap a few cell phone pics of the 05 coupe. The cab I can get for 54, and the coupe is 57. I am trading in a vette convertible and the price is the same at both dealers.

Oh I thought you were referring to a 997 GT3 !

DEFINITELY go for the TT. Those 996GT3s aren't much fun to be honest. I've tracked them loads and got bored after a few laps. Huge pass my man.

Send me pictures of the Seal Grey. The arctic silver is beautiful on the outside. But black interior, you need a contrast to offset when you put the top down. You must be used to it with the Vette and everything but I don't really think it does the cabriolet justice.

My vette is an 06 triple black convert. No contrast at all but it looks great when it is clean.

These two are great specimens, well maintained and clean.

Yeah, I was looking at the gt3 because my brother said it is a far superior track car.....not that that is a primary purchase reason. I may do a few track days but I will most likely autox and just drive it hard.

Something about turbos too.....they're just cool.

I originally was going to get a clean used viper but my wife couldn't drive it. That's not a primary driver either but it would be good if she could operate it in case I have a couple too many beers at dinner on the weekend.

Understood.

Yea, those turbos rock. Go for a turbo. Show me the pics I'll give you my opinion.

Vipers are cool. Unsafe for the wife even if she could drive it. Unsafe for anyone !

Can't beat a 4WD system and German engineering. This coming from a die hard mustang fan !

I'll run over and snap a few pictures of the car a bit later and put them up. What did you think of the 04 cab?

If you live in a place with beautiful weather, then go for it. Reliability is there, performance is there. Structural rigidity is obviously compromised for track, as is top speed. You must weigh that against romantic cruise with the wife on weekends

Personally, I wouldn't go for the cab...
BUT
Maybe if it had a contrasting interior like red or tan?

I don't like the look of the spoiler and wheels on this one but the interior contrast on the silver rocks.
