HID for foglights

I know this topic has been discussed before but after switching the color temp of my low beans to Garax HID 6000k bulbs I want the foglights to match or get close (no yellow tint at all). I tried different halogen bulbs of the same temp rating but the housing of the fogs still reflects a yellowish color. I would like to hear from anyone that has done the switchover to HID Fogs and their thoughts on how to install them (using the thin ballasts if thats possible). The area is tight under there with not much room so that might be an issue. I also have heat buildup concerns. I have used the Hoen Xenomatch bulbs before which did a great job matching the OEM color temp but I am looking for something to match the 6000k now. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

gradex - sorry I don't have much input but I am also very interested in doing HID fog light mod to match my 6K Garax. I thought about doing Hoen endurance but looks like they are out of stock right now. If I may ask, is it possible to do the fog light bulb change just using some ramps or do I need to take it up on a lift? Thanks!

gmoney seems to be the lighting guru here. Maybe he'll chime in. As far as changing out the fogs, ramps should be fine. It's a PITA any way you do it because the space was apparantly made for a German with teeny hands

Tiny hands indeed! The higher you can get the car the better, its small in those veritcal tubes the bulbs are in.

Fog light hid is totally doable, the main issue is wiring the factory connector to the supplied HID bulb in such a tight space. its a pain to remove and replace stock style bulbs, nevermind bulkier HID bulbs.

Problems:

H3 HID bulb may be longer than factory bulb so this would make stuffing the wires in there tricky in order to close the housing to keep it all nice and waterproof.

You may need to put a hole in the housing bottom to run wires, then make sure the holes are weather sealed.

small digital ballast will trigger a bulb out warning so now your looking at the bulkier ballasts that dont trigger the warning thus mounting location is a bit trickier.

When choosing your HID kit go with a waterproof kit with the smallest bulb measurement tip to base and the smallest ballast you can find thats error proof.

This mod has been done on the 997TT but its one Im skipping. I have the hoen endurance installed which is yellow but they are tough to get, sell out quickly as the H3 is not a common fitment.

If you use the ramps (which I have) you will be able to access the fog lights but its harder to work on them. What I do is use a hydralic jack at one of the jack points behind the front wheels and just to be secure I insert the ramps underneath the front wheels but sideways for more room. Make sure you put blocks behind the rear tires and you should be good to go. I've changed the bulbs many times to try different ones but none match the 6000k HID headlights. When you remove each cap pay very close attention on how you removed them and do it in reverse. There is a tab on the assembly that is a little higher than the other two and that has to go in the proper hole before you push it up and turn it clockwise. Then you have to connect the 2 wires you removed. If you haven't done it before its a PITA. After a few attempts it gets easier. Good luck.

Thats why my main concern with HID is heat buildup. Tucking away the ballasts (they make very small thin ones now) under the plastic fender wall should not be a problem as long as its watertight.

Good points. I didn't know the small ballasts trigger a warning message. Thats something I have to look into. I have used the Hoen bulbs too and they match the stock HID low beams well. They are very reputable. By the way I know your a guru about this kind of stuff. After i read some of your recent posts regarding finding a good HID bulb for the low beams with the right temp I chose Girax at carlightrends and absolutly love them! 6000k is the perfect temp with just a hint of blue but not too much.

Thanks so much guys!

I really like Garax 6K. They are very good match to Hoen DLED city lights. I may try out Hoen endurance for little more contrast. I noticed that 6K garax seems to reduce night vision so I definitely want to run fogs.

I compared the alignment on those Garax to the Hoen vega and oem bulbs and was shocked to find the garax was not aligned well at all. this would throw off the center light point in relation to the housing thus cut down on even more light outside of the added kelvin grade. it would be fine in a D2R housing as there is no shielding and the bulb is a D2C bulb which fits both D2R and D2S.

Now I am not sure its perhaps a fluke bad pair or a problem across the product line, I will post a pic in a few minutes to show. All I know is the capsule should be straight as an arrow.

Note how the leads angle away from each other, you can see the glass is not aligned dead straight in relation to the base. its much more obvious in person.

You always lose some lumens going up to 6000k but this might magnify that a bit.

Wow the one to the left (Garax) looks really bad in the photo. I may check mine when I get a chance.
