Passport 9500ci: best install spots
I’ve just purchased a Passport 9500ci system and am looking for the best install “spots” in a 997. After some searching around, here and on the internet, these are the top positioning “spots” I could find.
The 9500ci LED Display unit to be fitted behind the lower part of the PCM system (Between the sport button and the PSM button), and the 9500ci control unit with a separate power on/off switch in the ashtray compartment as per photos attached. Keep in mind that these are photos of the new PCM system and without the sport button.
Curious to hear from others that have done this install and locations they have picked for the components, that are hidden and look professional.
Not a big fan of having it stuck on, protruding out anywhere in the car – to me it looks cheap, or on the steering column or next to the rear view mirror… on that note I know there are some cool options to have it inside the dimming mirror however I can’t justify another 500 dollars on top of an already expensive system and install.

On the note above - does any one have any additional info on this settup (below)? Almost like a little heads up display without the heads up display :P
Cool kit if I could find what it is and where to get it, if it wasn't a total custom job.

If you google Radar Mirror these is a guy Scott there that does amazing work. I had my control unit hidden in the ashtray and Scott's company (through my local dealer) installed the radar's read out screen placed behind the mirror in such a way that it is not visible when off and easliy read when on. If you have a Vert, like I do, in direct sun it is a little hard to see but you can hear it fine.
Good Luck.

Finding a factory quality solution for mounting the 9500ci display is a challenge in almost every vehicle. We've seen some very creative and professional options but many are comparable in price to our mirrors and the placement for the display isn't always ideal. If you're out enjoying your car you want to keep your eyes focused on the road and the less distance your eyes have to travel to monitor radar and laser alerts the better (and safer).
For future reference we are an Escort and Beltronics dealer and if a 6speedonline member purchases the 9500ci or STiR Plus systems from us directly we will integrate the display module into your mirror for $99.

Question to those who are running this system...
I was recently told to forgo the rear plate "shifter" and run those wires up to the front and install another front shifter (purchased separately) using those wires.
The guy I spoke to said he had incredibly good results with three shifters up front - testing it with a cop-buddy.
My question is if I do that, will that effect the capability to pick up radar from the rear?
I'm not concerned at all with laser shifting from the rear - plus, the rear shifter panel is a dead give away, sticks out like a sore thumb, so don't want to use it at all.
So, is the front radar detector good enough for signals from all around the car? I'm guessing it's strong enough to pick up ambient signals bouncing off elements around the car - after all it sits under the bumper.

My car is in the shop right now but I'll take pictures when I get it back. My install has the control unit in the ash tray and the display unit on a custom piece that flows right into the top of the rearview mirror. Looks pretty OEM and hard to detect if the display lights are turned off.
My shop also cut a small section right out of the rear license plate and flush-mounted the diffuser so it doesn't actually stick out. If you're putting it up front then it doesn't really matter anyway.
The nice thing about the way they mirror-installed it is it reverts back to stock easily so you can transfer it to another vehicle (if you're so inclined when you sell your car).
My shop also put in an under-dash kill switch for those times when I travel into Canada. I've heard they are VERY illegal over there so I wouldn't want any kind of signals being broadcasted by my car.

The rear unit is useless. Using it up front in addition to the two front shifters will case interference and decrease performance. The front and rear shifters work independently.
Flush mounting or recessing the shifter head decreases performance. The more prominent the shifter head, the better it will perform.

According to Escort, the rear shifter is a "Rear Laser Receiver/Shifter". It won't receive radar signals, only laser. 99.9% sure about this.
Your 9500Ci Front Radar Receiver picks up radar signals from the rear when they bounce/reflect off structures ahead and to your sides.
Good luck with your install. Keep my suggestions in mind as most installers do not have the real world testing I have gone through

Yes, you are right. Putting a rear shifter in the front reduces performance - tried that.
If you read the post again, the suggestion is to put 3 Front shifters. It works better than 2 from my real world testing

Yup, was a little concerned that removing the rear shifter would decrease radar sensitivity from the... well, rear. Couldn't find any literature that implicitly states anything about the rear, so was a little unsure.
Will for take your advice with the third front-sifter up front and forgo the rear-shifter!
