well Tom perhaps there is a slight difference in spec, we are in Europe remember? And this only happened in one of the three he modified.
In any case, let me state that Skand is an electronics wizard, and not one to open his mouth unless certain.
I would love to do this conversion as well, and I will in the future, just not these days...

i manage to convert any wheel of 997,2 to operate fine (horn) without changing ecu or using my piwis....997,1 has a two wire connection for the horn and when the horn is pressed they close circuit and operate the horn.997,2 has these two cables together as one...so by definition the moment you install it the horn will operate all time...997,2 works different...it takes the previous cable and as you press the horn passes the current through metal base of the wheel acting like ground to operate the horn...997,1simply closes a switch and connects two different cables...

Just to add to the confusion :

- If you have a MF wheel (triangle) in a manual 997-1 and want a 997-2 wheels without MF (either the sport GTS or standard one) you need only the steering wheel and airbag. Straight swap without anything else.

-If you have a sport steering wheel (round airbag with 'vein') in a manual 997-1 and want a 997-2 wheel (either sport GTS or standard one) you need the steering wheel and airbag BUT also have to have your car reprogrammed (activate the MF through piwis) so the horn works. You do not need to redirect or rework any wires. Yes, I know it sounds strange but the horn works only if MF is active with new steering wheels.

-And I believe all others (Tip, MF on new wheel, etc) need the things Skandalis is explaining.

Hope this helps someone.

I'm confused and I don't see anyone here who has successfuly swapped multifunction to multifunction without replacing clock springs, controllers.

once again in order to swap mf 997.1 to 2 from my experience you need new steering column ecu and piwis coding...

I think you are correct ! There is no way around it I believe.

Did my post confuse you Tom ? Because I did not talk about a MF steering wheel.
You need to activate the MF function in the computer in order to make the horn work on a NON MF (so basic) steering wheel.

well i dont want to confuse anyone but i still cant find a way to just swap wheel and the horn operates fine...i mean i ve done this convertion to three cars, all tip one sport wheel two others mf wheel as stock 997,1...all of them needed rerouting for the horn or new ecu for stewring column.i am not trying to say you are wrong i just cant figure out why...my car had mf carbon wheel and replaced it with pdk paddle wheel...no matter what coding i did with my piwis the horn operated all times...

What about this scenario - I removed/replaced MF (triangle) with sport XPA (round) on my 2008 TT - can I change to the 997.2 w/o reprogramming?

Yes, your manual 997 needs nothing but the wheel and the new airbag.
When you replaced MF wheel for XPA you did not change coding I suppose ?
