GT2 help and advice

Hi guys,
As a complete newbie to both the forum and Porsches, I hope you will be gentle with me and help steer me in the right direction.

I have set my heart on purchasing a 997 GT2, and given the significant outlay, I need to make sure I am aware of all the issues.

I have friends with GT3s, but don't know anyone with a GT2 (as it seems to be quite a rare car in the UK), accordingly can you please let me know of the "known" issues?

For example, on the GT3s, the common joke upon meeting a fellow GT3 owner seems to be "how many oil seals have you had?" . Does the GT2 engine share the same issue, or have any similar issues of it's own that I need to be aware of?

I appreciate that these are supercars and am used to dealing with this sort of thing, but just not sure what to expect with the Porsche? Forewarned is forearmed and all that .

Your help is greatly appreciated .

Is that from actual ownership experience, and for how long / how many miles?

Did you ever track the car at all (as this is what it will be used for - track days and trips to the Nurburgring)?

GT3, GT2 and 997.1 TT all share the Mezger GT1 engine...and I've not heard any reports of problems or anything about oil seals. Get some more info from your GT3 buddies and see if they can be more specific. I have 30,000 miles on my 2008 TT - never any problems, no oil consumptions, runs as well (if not better) as it did when new.

It's the RMS - if you do a search, it's quite common on Porsches, but particularly the GT3s where it is "allegedly" an engine out job to replace .

Seems to be more "common" on GT3 which has a higher redline than the GT2 or Turbo. I did search this forum and the issue seems to be less prevalent here than a similar search in the GT3 forum.

GT3 leak a little oil when not driven a few days, a few drops, that's due to how seals work in vacuum.

I have an 08 GT2 with about 14.5k miles. I do not track the car but have had no issues other than routine maintenance. Compared to other cars I have owned I think the Porsche is bulletproof.

I believe the RMS problem was mainly found in the 996 models. I have not seen much RMS related posts on the 997.

To the OP...be aware, it's not a good car it's a great car in every way, e.g. power, handling, drivetrain, reliability, etc.

Fact is, unless you're a pro, you may never get to use this car to its full potential. It's not as forgiving sans AWD.

Exactly right. When I first got my GT3, the first owner had the engine removed and RMS replaced. I had the car sit in the garage for the first week or two when I purchased it waiting to register it and the completion of tires, seats and roll bar. I had a few (more than I liked) drops of oil on my garage floor. It got me thinking that the RMS job wasn't done right. But once I started to drive it on a regular base, the oil disappeared from the garage floor.

I have a 996 GT2. Bullet proof. 26K miles, raced, perfect.

Many thanks for all that have taken the time to post .

Obviously road use isn't really going to stretch ANY Porsche, let alone a GT version .

Given that I intend to use it on track, has anyone had any issues with the plastic fittings on the coolant distribution block fail? The reason I ask is that it could potentially write-off the car if these pop out and coolant spills on the tyres (or even worse, end up killing me, as the 'ring has very little run-off) - something I don't really want to happen...... ?
