997TT 2nd Gear Pop-out

My 2nd gear has started popping out on me during deceleration. Doesn't do this under load at all. It's pretty annoying b/c I have to hold the gear in tightly as I rev-match downshift up to stop lights. I haven't tracked the car but if I did I don't think this would be very safe.

I'm assuming I'll need to have the trans rebuilt. Anybody else experience this on a 997TT? Anything aftermarket I should consider? I do put 615awtq down to the pavement. Not sure if that matters.

Mine started that last year. Please let me know how it goes if you do the mod.

We tried some kind of detent mod a few months ago. Didn't seem to improve it. I'll find out what type they did. I'm willing to try anything before pulling the trans...

I know the 01-02 996tt had this issue but am surprised to find out the 997tt had this as well.

I never had any issues with mine, are there any susceptible model years for this?

BOXER12 is infamous around these parts
2nd gear synchro is always the weak one. Don't force downshifts at high revs!

Finally got around to having the little ball bearing installed. OMG! Fixed the 2nd gear popout by 95%. Why did I wait almost a year to do it!

Shifting is much more precise as well. Thanks!

Hi,

Need to bring this thread back from the dead

Seems I am hitting the jackpot of issues with my newly purchased TT

Getting some second gear pop outs under load when decelerating. Never came up on the PPI, and didnt do it for the first 1k miles of ownership.

Car has 34K miles on it.

In previous experience, it usually means the synchro is trashed, but I found this quick fix link on here and wanted to see if others have had success.

Thanks

I did this mod with the $0.75 ball bearing from porsche back in April - it has improved the situation, but has not eliminated it... I would say that it is an 85% fix - which is pretty good for 75 cents...

Thanks Kricci

85% is good enough for me. Prefer not to lay the car up in the summer

Update: My transmission is currently out of the car and in the good hands of California Motorsports. The gear popout came back and had become even worse over the last year. It was freaking me out that I would end up grinding a gear and ruining the whole gearset. Better to fix a little cavity than to wait for a root canal and crown.

Just ordered the ball bearing to toss in as a preventive item -- didn't realize that it is really difficult to reach without lowering the tranny. Will probably wait to install due to that.
