Attempt at purchase fail
Had to vent my frustrations somewhere , sorry for the rant .
I have been lurking and reading on here for some time , and finally set out to buy a car.
After going through looking at quite a few , I found what I thought to be the right one for me . ( wanting a black on black 6 speed)
I wake up at 4.30 yesterday morning and fly out at 7 a.m. With a small layover in Dallas and on to Houston . Touch down at Houston at 12 and send message to seller asking if he was close. He responds with a "no sorry having problems will be a couple more hours . I'm now kind of irritated but think oh well not the end of the world , I'm just going to be a few hours later getting home .
Fast forward 3 hours later and I get a text that he has another "emergency" that he cannot help and he is going to be at least another 3-4 hours . Now things are really heated and I am furious . I actually see the writing on the wall and start making another attempt at finding another flight. Low and behold there is nothing available at all . An hour goes by and I have really come up with no solution when I get yet another text, this one now says hey man catch another flight home , I will send you 500 bux , (yeah sure you will).
I ask the obvious and he comes back with he just pumped 8 gallons of diesel into the tank of the car and is waiting on a tow truck.
Again I accept that I've more than likely been led on , and I make my way to the rental car desk , get a car and make my 7 hour trek home .
On my way I go over and over the story and just cannot rationalize what had just happened . I think over and over what was just pulled . None of the stories make sense on top of the fact that he never reallyoffered any real apology.
The only thing that even remotely made sense to me was either he actually had someone else that was looking at the car before I arrived and it sold , or two he actually pumped diesel into it originally when he left to meet me and was trying to fix the problem with no success . I do know that he normally does drive a diesel truck so I can see this as a possible scenario.
Either way it was handled terribly and has kinda broken my spirit at least for now .
Sorry again for the whining but had to vent , the wife isn't real sympathetic .

I would have been livid!
I would say that he indeed owes you for the fare but I am no lawyer.
There is no way that he pumped Diesel into the Porsche. The Diesel nozzle is bigger and wouldnt fit into the filler hole. 100% pure BS.

CF

Sort of reads, between the lines, like a scam.
Not sure how this works, the details, but someone snags a link to a car, offers the car wanting a quick sale but asking for some goodwill money, desposit money, sent to hold the car.
The "buyer" attempts to visit the car, arrange to view the car finalize the sale, etc but the seller has disappeared into the ether along with any money the unsuspecting buyer sent.
Before I flew to visit a car I'd have a firm commitment from the seller to meet me at the airport with the car.
Even so I'd buy a round trip ticket just in case with the ability to get the unused return leg refunded.
I certainly wouldn't show up unannounced and on the spur of the moment.

I would never just fly somewhere unsuspecting with the too good to be true scams that come in all shapes and forms .
Yes I went over in my head wondering what I could have missed .
He has not reached out really since then other than when I sent a message speaking my displeasure with the whole situation .
He did send me a pic of the gas tank with the cover removed , as well as a service techs number to back up his story .
But funny, not a " I will make it right and get it to you gesture .
I will say again , hands down the strangest situation I have ever been involved in.

That is horrible and I feel your pain. I can't even imagine how disappointing that feels when you have all the new excitement built up to buy a great car and you have been looking for a while. It's in gods hands, maybe this car just wasn't the right one. Be patient and don't get discouraged even though in this scenario it can easily happen.

Didn't appear to be on the forums or an enthusiast , didn't know a lot about all of the options.

Just to clarify , I had : a copy of his driver license , a contact at his bank , a 10 day payoff letter from his bank , and multiple contacts confirming everything with him in the days leading up to day of flying out .

On the positive side at least you found out beforehand. Some folks buy sight unseen. How about a VIN - I for one wouldn't want to buy a car that had diesel contamination (if in fact that was true).
Yes I ran car fax , it came back perfect.
Conversely, I had a guy fly out to buy my car and drive it back, in the meantime his deposit ck bounced and gave me a sob story about his ex wife.....obviously, I kept my car.
An unsympathetic wife and a gold diggin ex-wife. What is the world coming to.
OP don't worry the right car is coming for you. Just think, if this guy doesn't know much about the car, he likely didn't have the OCD, the the rest of us, :-) to look after the car well.
