Drove my first tip today, 2009 TT coupe. Do they all start out in 2nd gear?

Thumbs up

From my experience over the past few years yes it does unless you are in sport mode then it will start in 1st gear.

When starting cold I find mine sticks to 1st. When in sport mode and braking hard into a stop it will drop down to first, but sticks to second at all other times.

You have received the info, but I'll recap anyway:

-when cold it will hold first gear a little longer to allow the engine to warm up
-when warm, and not in "Sport" mode, it will always start in 2nd (you can always change manually)
-with Sport engaged it will start in 1st every time, and in addition hold other gears longer....there is a caveat here, when you first engage Sport mode you'll need to get into over boost before the ECU will recognize that you're ready for spirited driving...once this occurs it will always start in 1st

also wanted to point out that even when Tip is in manual mode, during spirited driving when it reaches redline it will upshift automatically- i didn't realize this when I first got my 997.1 TT tip. It's nice being in manual mode & not worry about having to manually upshift at redline-
In auto mode during normal town driving, even with sport on, it always seems to upshift to higher gear much too early- s/b in 3rd but it's in 4th or 5th- I normally keep it in manual mode to control which gear i'm in & too prevent early upshifting as auto always seems to do.

Good point, and I agree. In normal driving, the transmission seems to "hunt" for the proper gear. Very disconcerting when it up shifts just before entering a turn or going uphill and RPMs drop below where I want them, so I always find it best to drive in manual mode. I can then keep the RPMs in a proper range for responsiveness.

if its hunting for a gear you have tranny issues. That does not happen normally in a tip

"Hunt" may have been a poor word. You may be able to better describe the unwanted upshifting/downshifting process.

i'm only 92 -ha-
even in sport mode- when it's in auto- & one is driving normally in traffic with light throttle- the tip is always one gear higher (lots of times two higher) than i would like it. That's why i'm usually in manual mode (whether in sport or not).
Driving with light throttle in traffic i try to keep it 3-4.5k rpms which means 2nd or 3rd, on freeway in 3rd or 4th- Auto mode, even sport, doesn't do this.
When in Auto, the sport mode is much better than non-sport mode during heavy throttle but shifts up whever part throttle is needed. Manual mode allows me to keep rpms where i want em.
