997.1 ignition switch replacement

Can't seem to find a DIY on this. Anyone have any info they can share?

I'd like to properly document this. I had this issue on my 996 Turbo and I'm currently having the issue on my 997 Turbo. I'll post pictures when I can.

Vehicle:
2007-2009 Porsche Turbo (997.1)

Symptoms:
When attempting to start the car, first turn of the key fails. Second or third attempt typically works.

Suncoast Part# 9X7IGNSWX
Pelican Part # 997-618-159-05-M100

I had a similar issue and it was the starter.......first turn of the key nothing......next turn started....dealer diagnosed it as starter and replaced under warranty...no issues since....might be worth a check unless you know for sure.

Dealer just replaced my ignition switch a month ago. I didn't even bring the car in for that, and the service advisor said he went to park the car in the shop to stay overnight, and he took the key out and the car was still running.

can the switch be replaced that easily? I was told the remotes had to be re flashed to the new ignition switch.

I am pretty sure the PAS system controls that function and syncs with the transducers in the key FOB, not the ignition switch itself. The switch just makes the physical connection to pass the current to the starter etc.

At least that is my understanding? I posted the Porshe WSM above and that was not indicated in the procedure? Maybe others know differntly..

Hello All,

Having similar issues with my ignition switch. Interested in the outcome of this thread. Did the ignition switch have to get re-flashed? Does your old key work on the new switch?

Thanks in Advance.

I have replaced the following...

  • new clutch switch
  • new ignition switch
  • new battery

It's much better. I still need to update the battery cable, then all bases will be covered.

My goal is to get the car perfect...but I'm weird like that.

Completed Ignition Switch Replacement

I replaced my ignition switch yesterday.(2005 997.1) Overall it was an easy self install.(30 minutes) The replacement switch did not require any programming and it resolved my issue. You also do not need the Special VW Tool. You just need a flathead screwdriver and it removed easily.
