Yeah,
This will work great. Use caution on the rings on the centre cylinder.

 

thanks. Are the intake and exhaust valve reliefs in the pistons the same? I have the arrows point toward the flywheel on both sides, but that puts the reliefs opposite

Any recommendations for methods for opening the holes in the base gasket for the 12mm studs?

Probably should make/buy a punch tool.. Might try a unibit..

 

I haven't done it yet but I'm expecting to use a tapered dremel bit, and slowly opening up each hole.

 

I googled people doing it to MLS head gaskets in general, and a 2 flute unibit seems to be common!

 

Any idea on my pistons direction question? I have the shop manual.. but IMO, its not clear

My cp Pistons have the reliefs cut deeper on the intake side of the piston, but it's because of the over sized valves. I just looked at my stock Pistons and they appear to be symmetrical? The writing in the inside in written to 1 side, if it were me, I would choose a side and put the same side of the Pistons to the intake on both sides of the engine? Don't take my advice as your final decision though, this is just my thought. you can probably measure the relief depths to verify they are the same, but they appear to be.

 

Yep, that is what the manual says too.. wanted to make sure I was reading 'de German right.

 

modeling clay and hand turn the motor to check valve clearance? i know its much harder on these motors but thats the way its done on american muscle for piece of mind

 

The pockets look identical, measure identical.. and the manual says to put the arrow toward the flywheel.. all sign point to A-ok.
