bigger contact surface on the crack for pulley to hold on to...I believe the evo is a better built unit....
im not sure what you mean by bigger contact area. i held it in my hand when it arrived to go onto my motor. its not built any better or worse than any of the aftermarket pulleys. its main purpose is to slow the accessories down.

The crank comes out of the motor with a shaft...( when the oem pulley is taken off)...the evo pulley has a holding surface that slides onto that shaft that's much longer so the evo pulley can hold on or attach to more surface area on the shaft...so if the oem pulley hold and uses 2 inces of shaft to attach itself the evo uses 2 3/4 inches ... Therefore bigger contact area to hold on to...basically the evo pulley has a longer foundation to attach to the crankshaft ...it's a little confusing but evolution motorsport s web has a detailed explanation which might be better then mine...
John...
Why you guys so aggressive ..... A harmonic balancer is a better option when using light flywheels. I was given this advice by someine who built tens of high powered 997/996 motors ....
Its advice, take it or leave it, calling it bull crap based on opinion .. Wel, is bull crap ..
Thanks for helping me spend money.. Sam is sending me a pulley.
which one did u go for ?

i disagree. the BBI one is known to break. Google it. Evo is lightened with holes and BBI and Proto have spokes, lightening a pulley with holes yields a stronger product.... which is why there isnt a dozen threads with broken EvoMS pulley.
the ATI damper sounds cool in theory. i dont think it's needed on your car, i suppose it can not hurt ....however 1k for pulley.... ehhh

I'm sorry if bull crap came off a little strong.. You have to understand that lots of us on these sites are either bad a$$ mechanics of work in some type of engineering field that had us understanding what's real and what's fake... But to give you the short answer to your question the real harmonic balancer is really the crank in the motor... There is no pulley in the world that is some how going to balance your motor when porsche dosent use one in the first place...so as long as you use the proper balanced crank you will be fine... The bull crap wasn't intended at you but really at the pulley...

i will have to disagree with this. on the mercedes amg s/c cars we ran larger crank pullies. the all steel pullies had a bad habit of backing the bolt out and causing huge carnage. i went with a fluiddynamics dampner pulley in 178mm (stock was 154) this pulley had .007 radial runout and .003 lateral runout. it worked flawlessly for 2 yrs until i sold the car. fantatsic pulley. now this may not apply to a flat 6 opposed motor but on a v6 and v8 motor its worth its wait in gold. i dont think a blanket statement can be applied to the pulley. i agree if the crank is out it wont fix it but going larger than stock applications can have adverse effects. (btw all mercedes crank pulleys are dampened
prodigy i do have the evoms pulley its what sean wanted to use but basically i have no use for that outfit. everything i ever get from them is either junk or missing parts. just my experience.

No offence taken, we are all here to share,
I agree its overpriced, would only go for it as part of a full engine build, I got the RS pulley in my car and like it so far.
Question to OP: when you refer to the "Manual", are you using the 996tt shop manual because that is all I can find online ...
Way to go!! and thanks for showing us it can be done
The flat 6 even fire motor is organically "balanced" by its design, doesnt need a fancy damper. Following article touches on why various cylinder configurations require more help than others.

yes we are talking porsches. in this instance im in agreement with you. im just not willing to make a blanket statement that dampened pulleys are not worth using.
