Opinion on the AMS intercooler upgrade.

I'm looking for an IC upgrade for a 997.1 Turbo. I have seen a few options (EVOMS, MARKSKI) but I saw the one from AMS and looks a lot better. Bigger than both and carbon fiber intercooler shrouds that looks good, more expensive BTW but if the part is better in quality and performance that's not a complaint.

If someone here have one in their car and wants to share his/her opinion, I'll appreciate it. And if there is another option I haven't seen you can share it too.

Speaking on the AMS...Feel free to contact me for any details or help on it. The kit has been updated and I must say lowest IAT's I have seen over anything when tuning. I had a group but you can still get in on as well. We may know lots of the same people in PR!

I have some close up of the cores on my build thread. I have been using them for roughly a year now. The quality is very good and performance is excellent. I have plenty of data if you ever want to see temps. For "off the shelf" this is probably the best option out there.

I believe there is another option you may want to look at. Similar kit build, I think it's do88. There is some data out on the internet. Sam may also have data. I know someone on this forum has them on his 997.2 and seems to like them as well.

Champion is also excellent but not a full kit like the prior two.

997.2 IC's have great performance at less than half the price. And they are OEM.

I have them on my car. Alex over at MaxRPM Motorsports in Bremerton, WA can probably answer you better than me. But I seem to recall him saying he only saw a 40 degree temp change even after a full afternoon of dyno tuning. My car pulls hard!

The .2's are awesome on a budget and log well sub 600/650hp. But they are restricted in flow and often leak when pushed with a strong tune after a while. Even on a 997.2 or a 997 GT2RS you benefit noticeably by upgrading them.

I would be interested in hearing som real-Life experiences of the do88 package. The numbers on their website (compared to the 997.2 IC) looks very promising and I know they have great products in general.

The forum member that has them on his 997.2 is 3llooi

I suggest reaching out to him, he should have data on them. You can also see more pictures of the kit on his build thread.

Maybe Sam can chime in, I think do88 only have the 997.2 released at the moment but are working on the 997.1? He would know.

Otherwise the AMS is excellent, my temps barely move at all during multiple pulls. If you already have a IPD Y pipe and don't need the full kit, the Champions would be an excellent choice too.

I know the .2's are the best bang for buck out there but there is a reason for it. I ended up selling my brand new set and didn't install them mainly because I didn't want to worry about the plastic end tanks.

Lots of good options out there honestly. Just stay away from the eBay china cores, you are better off with stock ones in terms of efficiency.

Thanks. They recently released a 997.1 version. I agree that the seamless metal tanks are more appealing. I don't think that do88 make the cores themself but don't know which manufacturer they use.

The do88 997.1 kit is available. Maybe someone will post some data soon......

Isn't the ETS 16-row the top dog in the under 750 hp category?

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...7-2-gt2rs.html

And I think they're generally under $1800,.. and use stock hoses.

From the designs I have seen everyone's cores are coming from different heat exchanger manufacturers. I do not see any cores that can't be purchased separately from different sources. Every once and a while I see the term proprietary core thrown around and it does make me chuckle. But I get it, it is marketing. A few tuners are pretty straight forward with this information and have no issues telling you their cores are Bell for example.

The packaging space is what makes this application difficult, you can only get so much length on the runners. In the runner length you need for the 996-997-991 there aren't many options. So your ***** to hit your heat rejection target are fin density and core thickness. Both of those will bring their trade offs. With understanding of heat exchangers and careful trade off planning you can achieve intercooler solutions that will work for the 90% percentile of the enthusiast population I think.

Just as an FYI most of the cooling is done in the first few inches of the runner. Another one to point out is the ducting. You want your bulk flow of air you are ramming through the core to hit the first few inches of it for maximum efficiency. If you spread the ram air out you are leaving cooling on the table. Anyone who works on heat exchangers and familiar with CFD work will agree. Take a look at your stock ducting...does it spread the air evenly or does it channel it more towards the first few inches...now you know why .

Get an engineer talking and then we can't shut up lol...OK I'm sure I pissed off enough tuners already. Enjoy

Very nice options indeed. These look to use the same or similar tube/fin core as the Wagner 5.7's. Almost too many to choose from now! I'll keep trying to compile data but I can say for now especially this being an AMS thread that I have not seen anything better yet and I do work with all

I bought my AMS intercoolers back when my car was stock turbo and I am still using them for over 1500hp. Fantastic product.
