DIY: Brake Pad Change

Hi All,

Just bought 4 brake pads ($877.45 total!!) and I'm going to be doing the brake pads as a fun project. I haven't done a brake job before but plan on using this video as my guidance

I'm not going to replace the sensors and hope to be able to reuse the dampners. Not replacing sensors as I have PCCB so I will be replacing my pads after wearing them down to 50% life so it will never trigger the sensor.

Would love to hear any tips/tricks!

If the vibration dampener is stuck on the brake pad use a putty knife to separate it from the pad instead of removing the caliper.

Does the procedure work for those with PCCB's?

If you don't want to deal with the sensors just remove and tie out of the way. It's just a contact. It's waste to change pads @ 50% all the time.

Don't the rears require the caliper to come off? I thought I read that previously somewhere.

Yes, you have to remove the rear calipers to replace the pads. You need to replace the caliper bolts as well. The bolts are one time use, they "stretch" after time, therefore need to be replaced eveytime you change your pads.

Where in San Jose are you located? Would be nice to meet up with another owner!

For those asking, I stopped by BR Racing, a recommended shop, and I spoke to the guys there. They said when replacing pads:

- Pads need to be replaced (obviously)
- Sensors should be replaced as they break removing them (eh, not to sure about this)
- Caliper bolts need to be replaced (for reasons mentioned by VID997 above)
- Dampers can be reused

I'm in San Jose as well and I'd be up for a local meetup. I just was over at 034 Motorsport yesterday for their Summerfest event and getting my car baselined on their dyno. Anyone heading to Canepa on the 12th?

For the rears, there is a risk of it stripping the uprights (has happened to me twice, time sert to resolve). Considering getting these to avoid it happening again: http://www.tarett.com/items/986-987-...csk-detail.htm

I miss the simple, cheap stuff on my 3rd gen RX-7 already . . . Changing the exhaust for Laguna Seca days was a simple 30 minute job on jack stands with 4 bolts and 2 hangers; no caliper removal for pad changes. Oh, and a full stainless cat-back exhaust was $550 and an upgraded intercooler was $1300.

Anyway, anyone else use those Tarett studs? I assume those studs substitute for the replaceable caliper bolts, eliminating the need to buy new bolts every time, correct?

I'd like more info on the studs as well. If I remember correctly, the OEM bolts are $7.50 each (x4) every time you change pads. Not too sure why Porsche doesn't have a rear caliper design with quick change pads!? Such a PIA to do the rears...

I have an extra set of six pots....been so tempted to fit them on the rear...but do not to screw things up, bias wise.

I know right. I was shocked to find I had to remove calipers to change the pad. Poor design on Brembos part.

The real value for me is in the fact I could interchange track and street pads easily.

So I've had the brake pads for some time but the whole month of August I was traveling for work. I need to get the rear caliper bolts. Does anyone know the part number?
