Recently purchased my first Porsche (997.1tt 6spd) and read a lot about the DME reports and over revs. Im trying to understand why this motor which has a 6750 redline in the Turbo, but as high as 8000 in the GT3, would have a major issue with a level 4 over rev? I believe the major difference with this and the GT3 application is the stronger connecting rods and possibly rod bolts in a GT3. I suspect the valves are very similar as well as the timing chain, which would be the likely failure points.
Looking to learn about this fabulous engine and the "dreaded" over revs.
Your car is a great example to point to when the DME weenies try to tell you a Turbo with a handful of range 4s from 100 hours ago is surely going to snap a rod any minute now.
Here is the rev range decoded to the best of my understanding, both a compression and leak down test was preformed. current ODO is 78,000. zero oil consumption in the 3000 miles.
The total time at range 1 is (3.12 minutes or 187 seconds)
The total time at range 2 is (1.9 minutes or 114 seconds)
The total time at range 3 is (.81 minutes or 48.6 seconds)
The total time at range 4 is (.23 minutes or 60 seconds)
The total time at range 5 is .(005 minutes or .3 seconds)
The range 6 was ~19,000 miles ago (.001 seconds) 445 hours in the past

Until a few years ago ignitions recorded in ranges 3 and 4 were considered by the Manufacturer to be safe with such vehicles still eligible for Porsche Extended warranty. Ignitions recorded in Ranges 5 and 6 would not be considered for warranty with existing policies invalidated at the point of over rev. Current Porsche warranty procedure ( as of 2018) considers activity in ranges 3 and 4 to be potentially problematic with compression tests and / or oil checks deemed necessary irrespective of whether or not incursions occurred several hundred operating hours prior to the check. However, in a pragmatic relaxation of previous protocol vehicles with activity in ranges 5 and 6 will be considered for extended warranty provided the over rev activity occurred more than 200 operating hours ago. The warranty provision is at the discretion of the importer and subject to the aforementioned compression/oil checks.
*** Porsche dealers are advised by the manufacturer to disregard over rev data on all PDK and Tiptronic transmission cars when assessing a car for warranty provision. Consequently a PDK / Tiptronic vehicle with activity recorded as high as Range 6, assuming all other mechanical checks are passed, will be applicable for warranty*** - Accurate as of 2018.
The total time at range 5 is .(005 minutes or .3 seconds)
The range 6 was ~19,000 miles ago (.001 seconds) 445 hours in the past
The last range 2,3,4,and 5 was ~172 miles ago or 21 hours ago. Past owner must have been having some fun before the sale.
Over-rev's are over rated. I bought my 997 with Range 4 over rev's. I put on more Range 4's. Sold the car to a friend. And miraculously the car is still running...
Are Porsche owners the only ones that debate over revs?
Haha. It's a small number so don't associate as All Porsche owners. Some should really stick to Camrys if they're so concerned about over rated over revs
What other cars record over revs in such an accessible way?
The funny part is, given how many 996/997/991s show them, you can be absolutely certain that a ton of sports cars without reports are running around with "horrible" over rev histories, probably even money shifts from 10 miles ago, while their owners are blissfully unaware of the ticking time bomb in their possession.
