Tip or Manual
Tip or Manual
Has anyone driven the tip? I ordered the tip in my car and am a little uncertain. I have always had the 6 speed and am not sure I will like the tip. Any comments?
Lots of heated threads on this one. But the choice is very personal and will depend on your driving style and what you will do with the car. Using it everyday in heavy traffic? Maybe a tip would be a good idea.
I drove a tip and felt like it was driving me and I wasn't driving it. But that's just me, so I bought a 6 speed. I also have the old fashioned mind set that a sports car should be driven with a manual shift. Now I know I'll take a lot of flack for that thinking, but what can I say, I just like it better ...

any one used to a manual has no reason to go for a tip. this is true for any car. u really should reconsider. i have a tip 996 because i can't drive a manual and don't want to learn. i sometime think i'm missing out. I know i am....
what I've found in the tip is that once you learn how to access the power correctly through the throttle, it's just as fun as driving a manual, if not better.
if you drive in full auto though, the car will keep you in 5th over 40mph until you gun it and even then the down shifts can lag.
it's all in learning how to maximize access to the power band through throttle input. you'll never convince the traditionalists but tip is a great transmission and highly underrated in my opinion.
pdk will blow doors on all other types when it's released.
get the chip tuned and a new airbox if you really want a lively throttle response.

I've ordered a six speed and could care less about being even a half second slower than a tip. Being obsessive and having two weeks to go before mine gets here, I've read everything I can find on the car in magazines and on the internet. Articles written by people who've driven both cars report a detachment in the tip. There seems to be a decided lack of involvement that contradicts what I perceive to be the car's purpose. From what I understand, there are quite a few steps necessary to get the car to launch correctly - you can't just do it without some preparation. That just seems counterintuitive in a Porsche to me. My girlfriend actually put it best, it's the difference between driving a car or riding in a car.
I wasn't sure if the six speed was the right choice for me at first but, now I'm positive.

I was talked into the tip on my 2002 C2 cab and regretted it everyday. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. It just wasn't as much fun. I found myself just leaving it in auto because I'm lazy and because the manual tip shifts were not anywhere near the joy of a true manual shift. I will never go back.

Thanks for the tip input
My car is on the water so it is too late to change. If I do not like it then I will order another one with manual and sell the tip. I do use it as a daily driver so maybe it will be OK.
How long is your commute and does it involve a lot of city driving (e.g. Boston, Manhattan)? If you have a long commute and it involves little city driving (read: traffic congestion), then a manual would be more fun. I opted for a tip becoz my wife would be driving it and we live in downtown Boston with lots of stop and go traffic.

Never had a tip. Based on the reviews and sitting in traffic I thought I would try it.

I'd get a 6spd, but it might be too late. As you know commuting with a manual is no biggie, more myth than reality. I do LI-Manhattan daily, only one day really sucked.
I suspect you will be changing from a tip within a few months. I've had several loaners with tips, hate 'em. I do know of a guy who changed his mind at delivery, bc the car was in such high demand with the tip they let him buy the other launch car with a 6 speed and easily sold the tip to somebody else.
