Seriously considering a 993TT instead....
I have a friend only deal on a low mile/known history 993tt, blk/blk 40k miles, topend done..
Seriously considering resurrecting this on again/off again deal from 6 months ago, it's just so much classier than a 997tt. I have an order and deposit on a new one but this is a deal that may be too good to pass up. The guy is in no hurry to sell it and never drives it anymore, it's had a buttload of work done n the last yr by the dealer. Just yesterday he made me a nice offer, not sure what to do. My heart tells me to get the 993tt, but my brain says just lease the 997tt thru my practice and don't look back. Thoughts? I know I've brought this up before, but you know how it goes......C

oy, tough one you are playing the heart vs brain game like you said. I have never driven a 997TT but have been on the track with the 993TT and have tracked several 993s. I love the 993 style so much and I think that the soul that the 993 and earlier cars have is something special I feel everytime i am in them. I am not taking anything away from newer porsches because on paper they are an evolution and better performers in every aspect. But for those of us who have driven 911s from the past, we know what I mean when i say they have this soul that is hard to match. I say go with the 993TT and put some big turbos on it.
I absolutely love the 993's in every way, and will have to own one sometime!! BUT that's a big difference between the two price wise and in alot of other ways, 997TT wont feel as special IMO and more like an every day car!
I'd say go for the 993. Its a true classic and one of the most iconic turbo's in the porsche turbo lineup. Its basically soul vs. technology(997). And the performance numbers on the 993 are not very far off from the 997tt. I'd say go for the 993. Start a poll!

chris-i have had a 993 (not a turbo) and presently have a 997tt. no doubt, on paper, the 997tt has more speed and technology, but i could see why a 993tt would be attractive. it was the ultimate air cooled carrera. for me, there was no decision, as i am much more comfortable in the 997tt (i am 6'7")-i shoe horned myself into my 993, and that was after my mechanic moved the seat back over 1". for the right price, if i was normal sized, i would have no problem getting a 993tt and using it as a daily driver. for street use, you woudn't have to mod it, as it had over 400hp. for track use, your option. the only thing is that it is a 10 or so year old car, and i certainly wouldn't over pay for it. remember, you are buying a car with no warranty. you should expect to pay no more than 50% of the price of the 997tt that you have on order. the previous poster is right, you could buy the 993tt for the right price, drive it, lose very little in a year or so when you trade it in on a 997tt if you want to, when a 7-8% discount on a new car will be reasonable. not that i don't love my 997 turbo, i do, but your 993tt option is not nuts.

My concern is that used 993TT are commanding high prices, which is good if you are selling one but bad if you are buying one. Also - like your friend, they tend to have lots of miles on them, and turbos don't last as long as NA cars, at least in my experience. They are beautiful cars, but are older and may warrant more repairs. Also - I would be suspicious of a very low mileage 993TT, and would check it out thoroughly.
I love my 911 Turbo S2, and it is a 964 circa 1992. But I notice that I shy away from driving it as much as my others because it seems more fragile with age, like some people I know.

They are beautiful cars. The 993TT S is even nicer (see www.rpmsportscars.com), and also the somewhat unreliable (just rumors) Richard Sloan from New Haven tends to specialize in 993 TTs. I would buy a low mileage 993TT S, if the prices weren't so crazy. For that money, you can buy a low mileage 996 GT2 and have money left over, or wait and buy a new 997 GT2.
The low mileage 993TT S seems to have actually appreciated in price, if you look at the limited production runs and asking price increases on the various websites.
Still, quoting the venerable Bruce Anderson - "Buy the latest 911 that you can afford".

Doc, follow your heart..I would opt for the 993TT myself. If you purchase the 993 and only keep it one year or so then given it's such a good deal you can sell in the open market and still get in a 997TT. It is very difficult to purchase the first model year of a vehicle especially with so many changes made. Let it settle down and then if you want go back in that market... Good luck with your decision.

I will give you the other side of the coin. I owned a 993 turbo and currently have a 996 turbo. I loved the 993 but would never choose it over the 996. The 997 is probably that much better than the 996, brand new with all of Porsche's latest technologoy versus a 10 year old car and tech. The 997 will be much more comfortably as a daily driver and you can spice it up with some mods.
I have never regretted moving from 993 to 996 and would never go 993 over 997. Just my opinion.
