Do all ECU's need to removed for GIAC chip flash?

I was under the impression that these programs were flashed on to the factory ECU and there was no opening of the ECU or anything? Someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

If you want to avoid downtime then you can order another ECU that can be flashed and then you can swap it out.

Not really worried about down time just the part about removing the ECU and if the dealer can visually tell afterwards.

No they can't but that depends on how it is re-installed AKA exactly the same way.

Hi Gmoney, no it can't. It has to be removed and benchflashed.

Yes, the program is loaded into the ECU and the flashloader calls the program up.

I too was under the impression that the ECU could be flashed via the OBD port and not have to be removed. This is what IA says about it - maybe I don't understand the process. http://www.imagineauto.com/ECU.htm

Ah, all ECUs in a porsche are flashed through the OBD2 hanress or port EXCEPT the 997TT. It can not be flashed in the car. It must be done through a harness on the bench.
