Is it just me...
or does anyone else open the boot after a long ride to let out the built-up engine heat. I do this when I pull into my garage. Is this habit of opening the trunk an unnecessary practice or am I actually prolonging the life of hose, belts, etc...?
p.s.
I also unplugged the small light on the lid so not to drain the battery.

I am concerned about heat soak long-term on the wiring, connectors, and tubing w/in the engine compartment.
So, I allow the heat to escape, and from what I have seen there is far more area around the 360 engine than what I have seen in Porsches.
So, I think what you are doing is a smart move.
It's just preventative maintenance.
It makes good sense.
Treat your car as if it's more than basic transportation, and you'll do better with it long term.

I sometime do that if the oil temp is higher than average and I will also open the boot after shut off the engine like what you did.
When I was at the PDE in Birmingham, it was 100 degrees. I asked one of the guys about opening the lid to allow the heat out. FWIW, he said that its better to keep the lid on, as the fan can dissipate the heat much quicker.

I got into the practice of less aggressive driving the last mile or so from my final destination and letting the car idle for a short time before shutting the engine off. I developed this habit from my turbo charged STi.
Thanks to everyone who replied!

If the temp in the engine compartment gets too high even with with the engine off a fan will run for a few minutes to extract the excessive heat.
With the engine running the engine compartment fan on my 997S stops when I open the engine lid and immediately resumes when it's closed.

If I understand, after the car has been shut off and the lid still closed and the temperature rises in the compartment from sitting, even after a few minutes a thermostat can turn the fan on to pull the excessive heat out.
The few times I hadn't pop the trunk, I never noticed the fan come on after sitting for awhile. I guess I have to drive her a little harder!

When you do little PM items that are only performed by maybe 2% of the owners universe, you might be neurotic - but this isn't one of the bad ones.

Is that a general statement of truth or am I being lectured?

Keep the lid closed and let the fan run.

I usually don't use the word boot when talking about my car, just trying to appeal to the whole Porsche community!

Thanks again everyone for all the replies!
