Anyone using a lightweight battery?

Wondering if anyone is running a lightweight battery and also if anyone knows the weight of the stock one. In my e46 M3 I ran a lighter battery as the stock was a porker at 55lbs. It was very common for M3 owners to run a lighter battery to shave off some weight, so I am wondering if any of you 997 owners have done the same and which battery you went with...please share.

not a great idea in these cars jay... they draw too much power and unless you drive the car _every_ day you're going to find it's dead after a few days of innactivity

Keep it on a tender when not in use and that battery will stay fully charged at all times.

Mine is a daily driver. I was thinking I could get a lighter dry cell deep cycle battery and shave probably 20-25 lbs. How much does the stock one weigh?

Would you feel a 25lb difference?

For street driving; I probably couldn''t feel the difference if there was another passenger. (Track is another story).

funny you should ask. i was at the c&c thing at the ford design center, talking to a guy with a 2005 GT2 with an 11 pound avation battery. saved him 25+ pounds. rennsport has a nifty aluminum adaptor (one pound) for the battery so installation is not an issue.

he's had it for quite some time and says it keeps a charge for over two weeks.

IMHO, for a daily driver, I would keep it stock. Say you had to drive 3 or 4 times during the day and they were short trips, I would be afraid that the car wouldn't start after trip 3 or 4. The amount of charge to start a car usually requires 20 to 30 minutes of driving to re-charge it to base level. For a battery with low reserve, I would think that there is a fair chance of draining the battery in the above scenario.

I went to a show and Millaracing had stripped 500 lbs from a 997. I can feel a passenger's weight. 25lbs I don't know.

Here is the way I am looking at it: I bought wheels and saved around 22 lbs (even more if you count rotational mass), I am thinking my high flow cats and muffler probably shaved a few lbs as well. So now throw in an estimated 20 lbs for the battery and all of a sudden you are approaching close to a 50 lb weight saving. Is it substantial no...but I figure lighter is better.

Here's where you get the correct light weight batteries.

The company is Odyssey.

They do batteries right.

When my Interstate MTP-91 quits (it's been in 1.5 years) I am going to an Odyssey. It saves about 20-25 lbs.

As the wise man said 25 lbs here, 25 lbs there, it starts to add up after a while.
