Flatbedding a 911, opinions?

Any experience flatbedding a 911? Car will only have to travel ~150 miles. The dealer can't seem to find a covered transport for that short distance. I am concerned about rocks and debris and the open air damaging the finish before taking delivery.

Probably less chance of rock damage than driving it 150 miles. I had mine flatbedded to the shop once, no problems.

150 miles won't be a problem . You don;t want to drive it ? Just seems like more fun . Did you buy the red one ? Congrats on the car.

What if I have him do the PDI but skip the prep and detail, leaving the white plastic tape on the car to protect it? I know Audis are transported using those white full covers. Then I could have it detailed here.

Nah in the end I felt that while red is fine by me, its too loud for the work environment and even for neighbors. Sucks I know but I don't want people noticing my 911 everywhere you go.

Still working on what to do, I may low for a while but wanted to know about shipping the car if it became an option.

I asked one dealer about it and they said too close for covered transport. I dunno, a bit nervous about the idea of open transport.

Also, how is the car handled? Does the driver have the ability to do any damage in just handling and bringing the car off the truck?

I got a flat tire on my turbo and cringed at the thought of a flatbed given that my suspension is lowered on Techart springs and the car was already much lower than a base Carrera when it was stock . Not only did they tow it but they did a PERFECT job lifiting it on and off . The guy explained that he has been towing Ferrari and lowered Porsches for years and that it's really not hard at all .

Don't worry .

As for the red . It's a bright color , not my style either but I did look at the car on the website --looks nice . I would pass on red as I try to match my car with everything from the types of colors I like in my clothes to my skin complexition and hair color and red has never been my color .I own no red clothing . In fact I even lately try to match the car color to my wheel choices too.

Good luck in your search .

Does $350 seem right for a 125 mile journey? I was told $2/mile. But is that cost or is there margin because the dealer promised to provide it at cost.

Unfortunately it's not an option with my schedule.

i own a towing company and a porsche, so hopefully i can answer ur question to ur satisfaction. I wouldnt worry about the rocks and debris, but if ur really worried about it ask them to cover the car after they hook it up. what u really should concern yourself with is the hook up points. this car should not have a tow hook or chain near it. 4 straps through the rim, strapped down from each corner. Tow equipment mags sell them as "porsche straps" specific for this kind of stuff.
price of the tow really depends on what part of the country ur in. i charge a bunch more than that if i was towing the car 150 miles, only cause the time it takes in New York to go 150 miles is twice the time it takes to do the same in a non traffic filled city

dinorocz, thanks for this info. i take it that a dealer that has been shipping for years would know this or else it would be out of business. but i would have them put it in writing if i ever did go this route...

They probably have their own tow truck (or affilated company) just for this purpose.

I would just drive the car home and enjoy the 1st day of carrera.

On a side note regarding break in period, when I picked up my 06 2S, we took the car for a test drive, and the sales person was flooring it in 1st and 2nd gear because he was showing me how the manual mode works. I was asking him about the break in period show stay below liek 3000 or 35000 rpm, but he said all Carrera have been tested from factory and can be driven like that without worry about the break in period.

If my salesman had done that I would have broken his arm. Any particular reason he felt he could get away with it? It is the owners decision how to break in his vehicle. Please note this is not a discussion on how to break in a Porsche (aaaargh). It is a comment on how we should be treated by dealerships and sales people. This is deplorable. Can you imagine how the cars there get treated when their owners are not on board?
