When accelerating agressively ( at speeds below ~ 50 mph ) the PSE valves are designed to close , thereby increasing the backpressure (for more torque ) and open again at higher speeds for less resistance .

With the valves open , 2/3 of the mufflers get bypassed.
I would think that would reduce the backpressure by quite a bit ( probably less resistance than most aftermarket jobs)

Just because Porsche does not advertise any power gains does not mean there are none .
Unlike the aftermarket muffler welders, Porsche has to PROVE it, not just make ridiculous claims based on Dyno tests from Joe's garage.

Either way , I did not buy the PSE to get 2 or 3 more HP .I love the sound.
It sounds like a Porsche , not like a suped up Honda on steroids .
Interesting you should suggest the PSE overide between 20 and 50 kph is designed to improve torque. I was under the impression it was an addition to meet noise legislation in Germany and Europe when travelling through towns. If the exhaust was tuned for backpressure reasons , surely the exhaust automatic switching would be based on RPM rather than speed ?

I know that the Gt3 exhaust can fail noise limits on track days, so fitting an aftermarket (loud) exhaust may restrict some of the opportunities for track sessions. Personally i went for a PSE over borla or fabspeed because I wanted the ability to revert to quiet mode when travelling with the wife or on long motorway journies. Nothing wrong with having a full on exhaust note , but sometimes its a little more classy to turn up somewhere with a purring porche than a full on race sound.

I have a PSE on my 987 S boxster, I've also added a PSE overide switch via my own mini loom that plugs directly into the control solenoid , therefore no cutting of the original wiring is required. This allows the PSE to be in loud mode without any overide from the ECU between 20 and 50 kph. There is also the added benefit of negating the need to press the PSE or Sport button to activate the exhaust every time you start the car.

I had a Borla on my Cayman. That certainly did not sound like a souped up Honda. The quality was spectacular. And on the track at WOT, only the GT3 sounded better. The character of the Caymans flat six was clear.

Aftermarket well done can and does make a difference.

My take on aftermarket parts built for a certain MY is that the tuners are just uncovering hp/torque/performance that is already there for a particular MY, and left unused by Porsche. Why would Porsche not put "all" available hp, etc. in each MY...so they can make 10-15hp incrimental hp gains with each new facelift, etc.

Hey Guys,

What would one need to do in order to get the same sound of the PSE on a stock (non-PSE) 997.2 S?
