Help With Purchase of 997 That is Out of Warranty
Help With Purchase of 997 That is Out of Warranty
I have recently been looking at a 2005 Carrera S with the exact options and colors I have been looking for. Grey/Grey, full leather, adaptive seats, nav etc.. for 55k. But it has 54k miles which means it is out of warranty. Does anyone know a good place that will sell me a extended warranty? Someone had told me that the Porsche dealer wont do it if its already out of its factory warranty. Is this true? Thanks.
Here is the scoop from Porsche USA (aka PCNA)
Porsche Approved – this grade is given to pre-owned Porsche vehicles which meet the high quality standards of the Porsche brand. This is how you can broaden your choice between a new and a pre-owned vehicle by one additional option: a Porsche Approved vehicle.
What distinguishes a Porsche Approved certified vehicle from a conventional pre-owned vehicle?
Driving pleasure, quality, safety and stability of value. In short: A Porsche which really cannot be described as a pre-owned vehicle. Rather, as a thoroughbred sports car the charm of which was once tasted by another driver.
What distinguishes a Porsche Approved certified vehicle from a conventional pre-owned vehicle?
- Porsche Approved vehicles are inspected by factory trained technicians who conduct a mechanical and cosmetic 100+ point inspection
- Repairs are carried out in line with the strict Porsche quality criteria
- Every Porsche Approved vehicle comes with a comprehensive Warranty
- If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total , whichever comes first
- If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first - Porsche Roadside Assistance, the exclusive support service that offers added security

Chances are you cannot have it CPO'd by a Porsche dealership. Only the original purchaser of the car can have it CPO'd and since you are looking to buy the car from a used dealer than this is obviously not possible. I would recommend you have a PPI done by a Porsche dealer. If you are looking for a warranty then it would have to be after market.

Fast - I would stay away from any car with over 50K miles unless I knew the previous owner personally and how that car was driven . You go into this with just too many unknowns on an out of warranty car The risk is simply too high.
Buying a car in "as is" condition opens up the possibility of future repair costs which may exceed any discount which got you into the car . That's my advice .

Well I just spoke to the dealer who serviced the car (new country porsche) and they gave me all the service records...all 32 pages of them. The car had a new engine at 47k miles due to a service technician taking out all the coolant and forgetting to put it back in before they returned the car to the owner..resulting in engine failure. Would Porsche of put a new engine in it or a rebuilt? If new, then the engine only has 6k miles on it which is good. Thanks for all the help so far.

Then Fast997S sees it and its his dream machine . Too risky . I am being sincere when I tell you that I wish this car was "the one" for you .
Maybe not so good --the 6K miles . Think about it for a moment. The owner gets a new engine after 32 pages of drama and then ditches the car ? It ends up at a used car lot in another state .

A new motor.
No warranty .
No ability to CPO.
Priced high enough to be within reasonable proximity of a newer car with less issues . And less miles and warranty.
I wish I could leap up and scream buy it .
I just can't.
I guess my questions are, how long do you plan to keep it and how many miles a year do you put your cars?
A car with a 2nd motor with really high miles is going to be a tough sell down the road. For an extra 10k you can probably get the same car with 5-15k miles and very few worries....and when you go to sell it you can recoup the intial extra 10k (maybe more) in cost.
