Stuck 911 vs Cayman S
Stuck 911 vs Cayman S
Hi, I am new to this forum and Porsche in general...sports coupes as well.
I am used to boat-like German sedans(s500, s550, etc)and sporty sedans more or less.
My current car is in need of replacement and I want a fun sports car to drive everyday, for about 70km a day.
I sit in at least one hour of traffic per day, and face stop lights on inclines daily...however, I think its stupid to by a porsche in automatic, but you guys know better.
My main predicament, is that I am stuck between the 2008 brand new Cayman S and a 2007 911 c2s with 4090km.
what do you guys prefer, as of know I found a Porsche Design edition 1 Cayman S-is it that different??-, and a few cayman s...but the interiors lack lots of options, as far as I am concerned.
I must be able to drive all year round...through Montreal winters.
I am also looking for a good deal price-wise...but these are pretty hard to find with Porsche...Thats the feeling I get...so is it worth waiting until the 2009 cayman s?
Does it make sense to spend 10gs more to buy a 2009 911...?
are their big differences between the 2007 and 2009 911...other than pdk.
and is PDK, a good option.
me...the interior of these cars is very important to me, as I am a bit of a techie and fuss-pot...but the drive comes first.i am 6 1 and 220 lbs...and the option of having 2 extra emergency seats is nice...but they are borderline useless, but can come in handy for me. also i am used to lots of space now (s550) and quite a bit of hp(387)...i have driven the 2008 cayman s, it was fun, never driven the 911, at least recently, if you think its a better choice for me, I will go and try it...its just a lot more money,
In, brief, which car do you prefer and why...cayman s 2008, or a 2007 c2s with 4090km for around 89999...good deal?
thanks a lot and sorry for all the questions
i am also considering c63, and xf supercharged-jag

I faced the same question a few months back and decided on the 911. I am 6'3" and the 911 felt much more room than the Cayman. I also have two young sons so the ability to take them along in the 911 also swayed the decision. Finally, I bought the car outright with the intention of keeping it for several years and the Cayman resale values seem much worse than those of the 911.
You really need to drive both cars a bit back to back before making your choice.

ok thanks a lot...so you are happy with your decision...i agree i have sat in the 911, and it does feel roomier...
my main issue is i can kinda afford a new cayman s but not a new 911... but my family and i have never really bought used cars...or older cars...just the way we are, but supposedly with porsche 2007 to 2009 isnt suppose to be a huge deal, but my main issue is the new 911 just came out and want to make sure i am not buying somehting obsolete.
i drove the cayman and found it very easy, but i found the footwell pretty snug. and i like gadgets and the 911 seems to have more.
but i have heard that the 911 is much harder to drive than the cayman, for daily cruiser...i drive fast sometimes, but no track.
also, is it a good price, and are their any major differences that will affect value from 07 to 09 in c2s...which is better in winter.
thanks

I bought the Cayman S about 5 months ago..a 2008, and just traded it for a 2008 C4S. I loved my Cayman but the 911 is so much more vehicle.
If you are going to race, then mid-engine might make sense but the Cayman needs HP and of course more $$$.
Either is a great choice going into a P-car, but go with the 911 if you can. IMHO

so you guys would rather a 2007 c2s vs a 2008 cayman s?
i heard the 911 is more challenging...is it hard to drive daily and in traffic and will its value be hurt by the new one.
also is 89 000$ asking price for an 07 c2s with 4090 km...high ,low, good?
thks...
i found the cayman, quick, but not scary fast...which i kinda like to feel, should i get bored one day.
thanks a lot
going with the 911, leaves me with another question, for 10gs more than the 07 c2s, i could get an 09 c2....not s obviously....
wow this is hard, i guess i have to go test drive the c2/c2s to see if i prefer it to the cayman or not,

The advantage of buying a used 07 C2S is that a big chunk of depreciation has already occurred to someone else's pocketbook instead of yours. New Porsches depreciate rapidly in the first couple of years, especially the first year.
Have you considered buying one in the US like many of your Canadian counterparts have? You can save a lot of money that way since the Canadian prices are much higher. Just do a search on AutoTrader nationwide to see how prices compare. I'd be surprised if you didn't save over $10,000 on an equivalent car in the US.

thanks, i gave the idea if import a lot of thought, but originally i was going to buy brand new...so i didnt even bother.
buying outside of canada is not an option...good service is very important to me...the service i get on my car from the dealer i bought it from compared to the other is insane.
and especially with special cars, id rather buy from a dealer properly.
my main issue, is i can slightly afford a new cayman s, but not a new 911.
i could get a 911 c2s for about 85, which is still steep for me, and i am still unsure if this is a better car than the cayman , also considering that it is used and the new 911 is released...
i am going to go try it.
but 07 is 2 years old already, so i understand that i wont lose much off it...which is a plus, but also for ten grand more i could get a base c2 from 2009....
confusing.
thks a lot

Why limit your search to '07 model years? If you're concerned about depreciation why not also look towards a low mile '05 or '06 that has taken even more of a depreciation hit and is the same car?
i am not willing to go later than 07...really 08 cayman s was what i went to porsche to buy, and then i found a 2007 c2s with under 5k km on it, so i figured, i get more space, more power but an older car for about 10gs more...but is it worth it...
i am not so concerned about depreciation, but it is nice to have a car that holds its value a bit... for instance my s500 went from 140,000 to 14,000 no joke, in immaculate shape with 150 000km...so thats why i was thinking about depreciation, but in the end i am looking for the best car for the money considering all factors....fun, price, age, tech, obsolescence...
but again thks a lot
is their any difference between lets say an 08 and an 07 carrera s in terms of drive and cabin tech?

i used to have a 911, and now have a cayman S...the cayman S is easily top 3 best handling cars ive ever driven, that includes other 911s, GT3, ferraris, etc.
drive them both and go with what works best with you. but like many, the mid engine layout of the cayman is phenomenal. the cayman S is also more pure than a 911, being much lighter (by about 200 lbs) and if you want more power in the cayman, bolt ons add some good power. dyno tested exhausts have given 15 rwhp on avg and theres more power with a flash and other mods.
the 911 is also a special feeling car...its just as much fun and has more space, but feels very different.
it comes down to what YOU need and what YOU want. good luck with the choice!
i would, however, say, that if your choice is between a cayman S and a base 911, the cayman S wins, hands down. add a catback exhaust and youll have ~315 hp and will have a faster car on the street and track.

The Cayman will likely be equally as fun if not more, is $10K cheaper, is 1 yr newer, has equivalent technology, etc. Given your criteria listed above why not just buy the Cayman. I merely suggested an earlier low mileage 911 as a viable option since the deeper depreciation for essentially the same car make it a good pre-owned alternative.
Either way I'm sure you'll be elated after driving the S class for years.
ok
thanks a lot
guys.
i think the cayman s is better for me now, but i will still go and try the c2s too see, if it is better for me.
also, would you recommend waiting for 2009 cayman s...?
thks
hypothetically though, if you had the choice between a 2007 low mileage c2s or a brand new cayman s 2009...which would it be?

A new 08 Cayman S will likely get hit harder w/ depreciation than a low mileage 07 C2S. Look at 2 year old Cayman prices..not great at holding value. There should be alot of nice C2Ss coming up soon as the early adopters to the 997.2 take delivery.
The Cayman is a very nimble car and easy to love. IMHO..its not a 911, especially a C2s. I had a 944 and hated it form the day I drove it home from the showroom--why- because I wanted a 911 and talked myself into the more nimble and more affordable 944.
Hard to drive daily for the C2S..no way. As far as in winter---you will need winter tires on a C2S or a Cayman or a winter car. The C2S may not be quite as on its tip toes as the Caymans S but it will sure pull out of corners with alot more gusto. I went looking at Cayman S but the whole time I was at the P store, I was magentized by the 911s.
The C2S came home with me. ZERO regrets.
Drive em back to back to back puting the one your are leaning toward as the first and last drive. That will make the decision clearer.
