997 reliability - anyone had maintenance issues?

Any maintenance concerns outside of regular service? Any specific trouble areas popping up as some of the earlier years get more miles on them?

Try searching on IMS (intermediate shaft) and RMS (rear main seal), for starters.

Both 997S cars were flawless but were sold before 10K miles .
Modded turbo is flawless too .

On the whole - as reliable as my Honda (3rd car) but a lot more fun to drive.

2007 997S bought new.

Had several relatively common 997 issues:

Loose front suspension bolt
Battery cable issue
A few rattles which I repaired and others which required a dealer visit
Very squeaky rotors replaced at 1500 miles under warranty
Clutch chatter but they all seem to have a small degree of this
Paint on ash tray coming off replaced under warranty

From a reliabilty standpoint it's been very solid, the engine is strong and uses very little oil. Just wish the six speed cars had an aux oil cooler.

Had the battery & alternator fail last October.
Dealership replaced both under warranty.
Replacement alternators are not new, they re-manufactured.
My re-manufactured alternator failed in January and dealership replaced it under warranty.
Aside from these issues, the car has been fine.

whats this?

Loose front suspension bolt?

I ask as I hear a strange noise (like a squeak, rub, something a little loose) when I turn my steering wheel, is that the symptoms, anyway one can self diagose? I added coil overs and this started a little after so fear dealer will blame this when in fact could be something else or what you mentioned above, thanks for any advise...

2007 997S coupe bought new with 11k miles on the clock...

The car has been flawless other than the driver side TPMS going whacky on me. Every morning it tells me flat tire, I drive 2 miles and then it shows 75lbs of pressure. I need to take it in..

I just had my 20k service yesterday. It was the car's second trip to the dealer (first for a 10k service). Other than all the tires I seem to buy, the car has cost me exactly $500 for routine maintenance and nothing else. The only warantee work I have had done is a blown fuse for the power outlet (replaced with a 15 amp) and a wiper arm plug replaced (it mysteriously went missing). The car has been completely trouble free. It is a year round daily driver, seeing hot, cold, stop-and-go traffic as well as track days.

This is interesting as the rotors on my 06 997 S intermittently squeak A LOT. The brakes are all +80% life left, so I didn't know what to do. Good to know that a good dealer will address this.

I also had some issues with plastic peeling on my center console, ignition surround and light surround -- all were fixed, without issue, under warranty (and I'm the second owner of my car and brought it to CA from out of state). Rattles were also fixed under warranty, and under the care of a tech who really gave a crap (unlike my experiences with rattles in previous Lexus, Audis and BMWs...)

It's a pretty reliable car IMHO... just take good care of it, and it will do the same for you in spades.
