Why does the 911 run 1 class lower than vette/viper in lemans?
Why does the 911 run 1 class lower than vette/viper in lemans?
not just lemans, but in several other races, the porsche 911 runs gt2 while corvette, viper, astin martin, ferrari, run gt1.
is it because of limited engine size or because the 911 platform cant run with the big dogs or something else?

If you have a lot of time and you really want to know go to

It's only 235 pages.
The simple answer is weight and engine size, but it's obviously a hell of a lot more than that, and things change. Corvettes (C6R) used to be in GT1 but from now on they switched to a C5 and will run in GT2. Ferraris and Vipers have always run in GT2. The race this weekend has added another "class" ( since no one is left in GT1 in the USA) because they need more cars - it will be the Porsche GT3 Cup cars which are actually a little bit lighter and maybe faster in the long straights (but slower overall) than the GT3RSR's that run in the GT2 class. If I have not confused you enough go to the link.

thanks. i ask because it leaves one with the impression that 911 does not have the mod potential of corvettes and thus have to run in a slower class. thanks for the link. if anyone knows the single most important reason, let me know
It is purely, and ONLY, a competitive decision of the teams. With all the available/allowable mods, 911s could run in GT2 with the others. They choose not to because:
1. The vettes are DOMINANT in GT2; they've owned it for multiple seasons.
2. There's nobody so powerful in GT1.

Also, your (1), the Vettes (C6R) have NEVER run in GT2! They are in GT1 where they will be at LeMans next month and then they are finished, done, retired...........A completely different Vette (C6) ran for the 3rd time this year in the GT2 class at Long Beach a few weeks ago and finished 3rd from last. It may run in a couple more races this year and then get in full time next season, but this is up in the air.

I think he reversed GT1 and GT2 in his argument.
